I'm thinking about making a custom set of grips for my Colt Python, mainly just to be able to say "I made 'em".    I don't really want to do the fitting on the Python, to avoid screwing up the finish.  Anyone have suggestions on where I might find a frame "blank" I could use, or how to make one?

It is a lot of work to make grips. I did it with simple hand tools for my .22 l.r. Korth. To save the frame, you should not use tools while the grips are on the gun but mount the grips frequently to check the fit.
