Yes, the slide cutouts are to offset the extra weight of the longer slides so that the same recoil assemblies can be used. S&W did the same thing with their 5" M&Ps by making the longer slides thinner than the 4.25" versions.

I got to play with one at my local shop, I have owned multiple MPs, best trigger by far on an out of box MP, just picked a VP9..5 inch ported has my name on it. 
It's serves no practical purpose in my collection but it's a damn fine handling and looking shooter. |
