Howdy all.. all suggestions appreciated.. Have had the P226 for many years with zero problems.. It has resided in the bedroom with 10 rounds in the 15 round mag since I've owned it.. Goes to the range often, but probably only 2000 rounds through it.. Is well maintained (I thought).. At the range today I had FTE (stovepipes) FTFs and FTF last round.. Used both factory mags with same problems.. Through inspection upon returning home and I found nothing obvious.. Was using ammo I've always used - PMP.. Any ideas on what is causing problems.. My only guess is mag springs gone bad over the years????

thanks.. roger

First guess is that the gun, while clean, is probably bone dry...check to be sure it is properly lubed. Second guess is a bad lot of ammo...PMP is mostly good blasting stuff, but no one makes perfect ammo. I have a problem believing that this might be the mag springs, but I suppose it is just possible. I have seen officers who kept the same mags fully loaded for 5-7 years and only unloaded-reloaded once or twice a year at qualifications never have a problem. What really wears out springs is constant unloading / reloading, not staying compressed in the loaded position for long periods of time. Is that something you do, say, monthly? If so, it may, indeed, be your mag springs.

Hopefully you are not using PMP ball as your defensive load? JHP stuff is MUCH better, and I would load all 15, then chamber the top round and not top the mag off...so 15 rounds total. No real need to only load 10 as it is not really helping the spring, but it IS 50% less ammo for you if you ever really need it. JMO

Good suggestions. One other thing is the return spring. It's probably time to change it out for a new one. If the slide timing is off you'll get those results.

Gentlemen.. thanks for the replys.. interesting info on the mag springs.. Yes, I was loading mags only partially to reduce wear, will change that.. Agree about the ball ammo not for defensive use.. Think I'll try replacing the return spring as suggested.. thanks again guys..

all the best - roger

Go straight to SiGArms or Wolff.

What's a return spring?  I think you mean recoil spring.  The Sig twisted wire ones seem to have a finite life span, particularly in my .40 239.  If you have had the gun for many years, it's probably time for a new one.

Sig suggests replacing the recoil spring at 6000 round intervals. I have several thousand rounds through a P226 and haven't replaced the recoil spring as yet. I bought two used Sigs and the first thing I did was replace the recoil springs. Just to be safe, I didn't know how many rounds went through them.
