I ran across this lightly customized Combat Commander today.   At first glance I wasn't interested (Combat Commander?  meh) but the Heinie sight caught my eye, and when someone knows enough to get a Heinie installed, I have learned to take a closer look.   When I saw the yin/yang engraved on the rear of the slide, I knew it was coming home with me.

A bit of close inspection revealed a custom barrel (fit very tightly), trigger job, sights, and dehorn.   It looks as if the gun sat in a safe for the past 10 years, it was clean as a whistle and dry as a bone.  The price was irresistable and the guy behind me was eyeballing it pretty hard, so I knew it wouldn't be there if I put it back in the case.

The beavertail is seamlessly installed, and you can see the gentle dehorning of the rear of the slide and hammer.

The build date is covered by the slide stop when installed.   A similar scroll is engraved on the other side of the dust cover.

The front of the rear sight is dehorned in a unique way.  Front sight is tritium, rear sight is black –– my preferred sight picture.

The trigger is set at 5 pounds.  I haven't detail stripped it yet, but I'll be interested to see what custom touches, if any, are present on the internals.    Haven't shot it yet, but if I can get to the range this weekend, I'll update with groups and a range report.

The gun buying demographic around here is such that a really nice 1911 can languish for weeks on a shelf while people walk past it to pile up four deep at the Kimber and Taurus display cases.

Update:  I got a chance to put about 50 rounds through it today (all the ammo I had).   I had lightened the trigger to about 4 pounds.   Ammo was my 200 gr lead truncated cone reloads; they make major power factor but not much over.

The bad news is that I had about 3 or 4 failures to return to battery.  Each time, a slight nudge on the rear of the slide was enough to send the slide home.  The barrel fit is very tight, I'd put it right up there with an out-of-the-box Baer.   The rounds all dropped into the chamber without undue pressure, so I'm pretty sure the chamber has been reamed properly.

The good news is that this by far the most accurate Commander I've ever seen.  I had a couple of 6" circles at 20 yards, and shooting freehand, had no trouble at all keeping everything within the circles (except for called flyers, of course).

From all I can tell, the gun probably has less than a box of ammo through it since it was built.  The recoil spring is probably no heavier than 18 pounds, so I may swap in a 20 pounder until it breaks in a bit.  I have no doubt it would function flawlessly with premium defense ammo, since everything about the gun seems to indicate it was built for carry.
