[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Mexican with a string? (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 2/2/2010 3:37:34 PM EDT
| I've read numerious references on CCW & LEO sites about a string being used (by gang bangers, etc) to carry "Mexican", ie; carry a handgun tucked in the pants without any holster. What is the string used for? How does it work? Does anyone have pictures to illistrate? |
|
Quoted:
Take a loop of string and make a hitch going around your belt (not your waist, your belt). Pass the handgun inside your pants and through the loop you've made with the string. The string is to help the handgun maintain it's position on your waist. I googled for a photo and came up empty. Its a lark's head or cow hitch: Your belt would be the repelling thing. http://www.ojaisar.org/photogallery/Knots/Girth%20Hitch_400w.jpg So like the barrel/end of slide gos through the other loop? |

What the OP asks about is what the other posters described...........a closed loop of, say, 550 cord, hitched through the belt as shown in the first photo (with the descender). Pistol goes through the loop, IWB, loop keeps pistol from falling all the way down pants. It's more of an "emergency" carry method than anything else. |

It's more of an "emergency" carry method than anything else. +1 That's how the French resistance carried in WW2. It gave some retention, better than just stuffing it in the pant anyway, and if the gun had to be ditched a string, if found, wasn't as likely to raise suspicion of a German Soldier. And the string could be removed and ditched just as quickly anyway. |

Secret is makin' the right size of loop, and using a good knot to secure the ends...........the "Fishermen's Bend" works best. |

I've seen a slightly different string method where a short piece is tied from the waist fastening button hole on trousers to the first beltloop. This short length is then tucked inside the waist band and the pistol is held between the string and the waistband. A bit simpler.
Jim Grover made a up a few "improved strings" in the 90's by attaching high tension spring clips to the ends and adding some surgical tubing over a larger diameter (~5mm) cord. I've got one and used it in the past. Not a holster but, better than plain Mexican/Felon carry |

I guess some people enjoy keeping their nuts at gun point all the time. Does the term "mexican" meen it has to be at 12 o'clock? I've carried holsterles at 3 to 3:30ish position. Watch how Sarra conner carries in Terminator 2. BTW, Manum PI carried his 1911 holsterles, bareback, whatever, in Small Of Back position. |

Most of us don't consider how folks on TV carry, when we're making decisions on how and where to carry firearms. But YMMV, I guess.................. |

The first I heard of a "String carry" was by the OSS and Resistance, etc.,. in WWII. A viable method considering their circumstances. Not to be confused with a lanyard, which is also useful. Modern lanyards, with breakaway fetures, made this aid less risky to the user.

I think the original poster was just curious and not planing on doing this. Next time your standing in line at a convenience store and some low lifers walk in check their belts for strings. With the info here you may have a jump on things..... |

I have officially decided THAT thing is pretty damn cool, for this purpose. |
|
Theres a holster/trigger cover thing that you attach to your pants with a lanyard. it overs the trigger guard to prevent a ND when you mexican carry, but when you draw, the lanyard yanks the trigger cover off letting your shoot.

Quoted: Quoted: I once saw a picture somewhere to take a coathanger, make a hook on each end, facing opposite sides. One hooks over your belt, the other goes in your pants. Wrap it in electrical tape, and put the barrel over the hanger to hold the gun up. ![]() I didnt say it was a good idea. Or do you not understand what i meant? Do i have to break out MS Paint?

Damn guys, you make me REALLY feel old when I realize that no one here knows just what a string holster is.
Simple as can be, ou make TWO loops from one piece of string (preferable on the order of paracord or just a bit lighter.....leave a couple of inches between those loops and fit BOTH on your belt at your preferred carry location............to use, you place your firearm inside your pants with the section between the loops nearest your body holding it via the frame ..........if you made it the correct length it'll keep your gun from sliding down your pants leg! Yeah, it REALLY works...............NO it ain't dumb!! The beauty of it is that very few folks (as evidenced by you experts hereon) know just what the hell it is!!!!!!! |

The only thing that would make this carry method more awesome would be if there were another hook of some kind holding the gun upright by its trigger. |
