Back in 1978, when I got my first carry permit at age 21, my carry gun was a Browning High Power (which I still have) and, since everyone said I had to have a hideaway gun (we didn't call them BUGs then) I picked up a High Standard double action 22 magnum derringer as my hideaway which I carried either in vest or jacket pocket. For reasons I can't remember, I sold or traded the derringer many years ago. I've always regretted it and have wanted another one, but the prices on the originals have gotten out of hand. I'm not going to pay $400 for one, and the only ones I see under $300 have been missing parts or are a solid mass of rust. Yes, they're making them again and there are some cheap clones, but I wanted an original. So today after enjoying a half a day at the range with a good friend, I wander into a local gun shop and what do I see? You guessed it, an original High Standard Derringer in 22 mag and the price is marked $99. I'm ready to shit. I got someone over who got it out of the case. It's got tons of finish wear and had some surface rust, it was dry and filthy, but as tight as a drum with shiny barrels and all the parts were intact. I told the guy, "It's mine". I cleaned the surface rust off as soon as I got home and cleaned and oiled as well. I also fixed a chip in the grip that was ready to fall off. In the near future I'm going to strip off the finish off and either gunkote or park her and probably put a new set of grips on as well. For some strange reason, I feel my life is now complete. ![]() And since some of you only look at the pictures...... |

Quoted: Now, do you carry it? Or is it just a memorable piece of the collection? For right now it's just a memorable collector piece. But who knows? Depending on how well the refinish goes I might decide to make it an ankle or vest pocket gun. It's as big as most tiny autos these days but it's far more reliable than the ones I've had and it's considerably smaller than a 5 shot snubbie. Nice looking derringer and an even better back story. You need to write professionally. Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. How strong is that trigger? I always wondered how people carried them without them going off. It's pretty heavy, a S&W revolver puts it to shame. I don't have a trigger pull gauge handy but I'm guessing 15-18 pounds. |
