They have a reputation as a good solid pistol at least on par with the phillipino guns of today. They have not been imported for about 20 years so finding one can be difficult. I myself would not seek one out but if you ran into one in the same sub 400 dollar range as the entry level guns of today it would be a good buy.
I feel so old some days when we talk about sub $400 1911's and I can recall real colts being around for that all day!

At the price they are selling at now, it doesn't make any sense to buy them.
400-500 let's you look at a variety of manufacturers currently available that can also provide factory support should you need it.

True, but for the basis for a custom build the Norcs can't be beat. 5100 steel is great stuff to build a 1911 out of, and if you are going to replace most of the parts, anyway, they make good sense... As long as you're not worried about resale value.

I have one.  It is fine just like it is.  It runs great with anything.

I see no need to customize it.

Upper right.

Geez, I need to do an updated pic of my 1911s.  None have the Hogues on them anymore.

The SS SR1911 is now FDE.

I have a SEAL Foundation SR1911 as well as 2 more RIAs.  (bottom right is a Tactical)

Maybe just me, but a Chinese 1911 seems like blasphemy.

Well, I also have a Chinese M14 clone, an M14S.

Potato-Potahto.

My last 1911 said 'Imbel Brazil' on the frame and it didn't bother me one bit.

This one needs different grips and an ambi safety if I keep it, and maybe new springs all around.

I found this one at a Calebas for $409 and it was the last day of a 10% off sale on used firearms.
I added the magwell, beavertail, hammer and ambi safety out of my parts bin.
I've been a Glock shooter for several years and just couldn't pass this up since I've been wanting to add a 1911 back to te safe for a couple of years. I've had several but sold them off.

This one shoots my 230 grain tumble lubed cast bullets very nice too. I think it will be making a trip to Novaks for sights.
