Is the insurance offered by the NRA to protect your firearms a scam? I sure think it is and here is why.

We filed a claim with NRA insurance after a theft.  Took a few months but they paid most of the deductible left after homeowners insurance.

That was about 20 years ago though.

My buddy didn't got sheeot for his stolen guns. They used blue book values and the prices were rediculously low. But, I had to tell him about the insurance. He didn't know he had any kind of coverage so it was a case of something was better than nothing.

I can't count the number of times that my former clients would tell me that the NRA policy never paid for lost, stolen or destroyed guns.  Having been an insurance agent for 15 years, you hear lots of stories.

I use Historic Firearms for guns and Jewelers Mutual for watches. Not homeowners. Never considered NRA.

I support the NRA and ISRA with my membership dues.  I immediately toss any and all NRA credit card, gun insurance, life insurance and other direct marketing.

I asked them to remove me from these promotions and save the mailing cost as I would NEVER sign up for these.

Still get them.....

One of the main reasons why I left the NRA and joined the GOA.

How is the insurance for instructors? I have been thinking about getting it for myself.

You can use this to dis' the NRA if you like, but the moral of the story is already known to any Dave Ramsey fan: gimmick insurance is a scam. Buy your insurance through an agent that you trust and skip the gimmicks.

I was broken into twice. The NRA payed the remainder of what the Insurance company didn't including optics, mags and ammo that the insurance company wouldn't cover.

The second time all that was stolen was my son's 10/22, but my homeowners wouldn't cover it because it was less than the deductible. The NRA insurance paid for it. I didn't have receipts, and the lady on the phone told me to just go to my favorite gun store and get a quote for replacement of the rifle, and of the scope and mags that were with it and anything else that got stolen that was related to it like locks, cleaning equipment etc.

No scam.

ETA

My claims were in 2005.

I wouldn't call us haters.  I think the NRA is best serving it's members by informing and lobbying the public and congress about firearm safety, regulations and shooting sports.

In the last few years the NRA has departed from it's core charter and bombarding us with credit cards, gun insurance, life insurance, identity theft coverage and others that
are likely to find their way into my mailbox.

My membership dues shouldn't be diverted to support these programs which have very little to do with NRA's charter.

On the other hand, dues alone don't support an organization like this, so perhaps it's the other way around.

Why do you think they are?

Most of thee programs are designed to MAKE MONEY for the NRA.

Even the Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) does not get money from your dues.

As a tax exempt organization, the NRA has strict lobbying limits.

The ILA is NOT tax exempt, so it is the lobby arm.
