I have a friend who is offering a very good deal to me for a double action only handgun. I've never owned a double action only handgun so I'm not familiar with the feel of double action only. The gun would primarily be for target shooting and steel plates. My question is, are double action handguns as accurate due to the extra trigger pull and are they as fun to shoot at steel targets etc., as say, a 1911 style pistol? I like shooting the 1911 style pistol because you know when its cocked and almost exactly when the hammer is going to drop during the pull. From dry firing the double action pistol there is a lot more travel on the trigger. The gun is a really good deal or I wouldn't consider it. Could someone give me some advice or personal experience shooting double action only?
Thanks. |

I have a S&W 640, .357 Magnum. The trigger pull is somewhat heavier (IMO) than the DA trigger pull on my Ruger GP100.
The trick with DA shooting, as with any shooting, is to develop a trigger pull that is STRAIGHT BACK, and does not make the front sight wander as you pull. Takes some practice. If it is a good deal, go for it. Check prices on other gun sites like gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com. I'm guessing this may be a good gun for self-defense. I carry mine in summer months. |
