Well I got some money saved up and it's time to buy my first handgun. I decided to go with Springfield Armory but can't decide between a XD45 compact or a 1911 loaded. Which would be better for a first time handgunner. I'm leaning towards the XD45 compact because I plan to get my ccw permit soon. Help me decide.

Well I've bought the XD40SC for CCW. But thats not in your options You need to see which one fits what you are wanting, conceal ability, comfort shooting, round count, accessory availability, ease of cleaning. So I'm going to suggest you go to the store try both of them, handle them, try on holsters with them, wear them around the store or at least at the counter  if they will let you or go to a range and rent one and stuff like that. Good luck they're both fine guns.

Everybody needs a 1911.

The XDs are nice as well.

Handle both and go with what fits you best.

i'm gonna throw in another vote for handle both and decide what you like, either would be a fine gun but you have to decide what you want the gun to do, then decide which of the 2 would do that best

You cannot go wrong with either a good 1911 or the XD. Get what feels better, there grip angle is same so they will point similarly. Then go and get some inexpensive, not cheap, ammo and shoot it a lot. It takes ammo downrange to get you used to the pistol and to break it in. This also lets you know if the gun is reliable. Any problems with cycling should go away after a few hundred rounds as the pistol breaks in. Keep lubed but not too much. Formal training is a great idea but be careful, not everyone that call themselves an expert is.
Have fun, shoot a lot!
