ive been looking at handguns for a while now.  ive got about two months until my pistol permits come in so i went around to local shops checking out what they have. i was looking to make a deal with them two guns at once even tho i wont be able to pick up the second gun until 30 days later. i was getting a 9mm xd and a 1911 but i still haven't chose what 1911 to get.  i did want a 4 inch though for ccw.

first shop didn't have any kimbers that i was interested in. they had one that was low end. but he had a target model (add least thats what he said it had no markings) 1911 S&W that seemed pretty nice. he told me that plus the XD9 for 1450 out the door. the 1911 had a 1000 price tag.

second gun shop had more choices para, kimber, S&W, the owner of the shop wasn't there so i couldn't get a price on a group purchase but i think im goin to ask for a price on the kimber eclipse + the XD9

so what do you think about the first deal? that's taxes background and all the good junk. any other guns i should look at for around 1k

so..... no input yet that could be because there are a thousand other threads like this out there or because people dont want to try to read my post because i cant spell or write. either way i went to the second gun shop and its basically going to cost me a extra 350 to get the kimper eclipse target. do you guys think the kimber is worth that much more.

Depends on what you like, when I got my first gun I read like crazy for about three weeks straight, once I found something I liked I would go check it out, shoot it if I could...
then handle a bunch of other guns, ones I liked I would write down and read up on them.

I vote get a glock with the round you like best.

Glocks are great, simple and they just work.

1911's are something else, I love 1911s but I carry glocks.

Buy a main stream gun and you will be fine, I own a bunch of pistols and I'm adding more to my collection all of the time.
And each and every time I do a ton of reading and handling before I lay the money down.

ETA: I always thought you had to be "special" to get a CCW in NJ

I'm personally not a big fan of the XD.  It seems that the general consensus in here is that that XD is at the bottom of the "should I get a Glock/M&P/XD" pile.  But it is also generally the least expensive.  I hope you've tried it.  I didn't like it when I tried it.

As for the 1911, there's plenty of love and hate for Kimbers.  There's been enough complaints that I wouldn't be confident in buying one, BUT THAT'S JUST ME.  For the record, the first handgun I ever shot was a Kimber 1911, and it was not good, but in all fairness, it was also a rental.  Between the Para, Kimber and S&W, I'd take the S&W every time.  People complain that it has an external extractor which was not intended by our Lord and Savior John Moses Browning, but whatever, it works.  The S&W will have a slightly longer barrel, .25 inches, but this should be negligible for concealed as people carry full sized 1911s all the time.

Yes, glocks are great. XDs are amazing and very reliable. I went to a 4 day Frontsight handgun course and of the 20 students I spent a decent amount time with, half had XDs and put at least 600 bullets through each of em with only one gun having any real malfunction and that was a simple fix. A decent portion had glocks as well and those worked just fine... What it comes down to is go to a gun store and handle the ones you are thinking about. Whatever one feels best in your hand get that.

i have shot the xd once and held one dozens of times and i know i want the XD thats not questionable. i went to another store today looking and the first store in NJ to have a 4 inch barrel. he had the kimber pro cop for 1200 and the xd for 540. he said take 30 bucks of each gun if i buy them both. that doesn't seem like much of a deal. im goin to go play with the S&W tomorrow again i just think i really want kimber

Then get the Kimber and XD and be happy, man.  Even if you bought something else, say the S&W, that Kimber will be on your mind.  You don't need us to tell you how to spend your money.

Get both?

Like I said, Kimbers aren't my gig.  Between the two, I guess the Eclipse, since I find the silver/black/wood look of the CDP too busy.  But I'm not too crazy about the grips on that Eclipse, either.  I would actually get the Pro Carry II in black if it were me, more my style.

little bit of a curve ball.. i think im going to buy the crims and carry one i basically have to go with what they have in stock at the local gun shops. they have the tactical II and the crims one and the CDP. the CDP is 1200 and the crims and trace is 1025. not sure what the tactical II was there wasn't a price on it and the store owner wasnt there. im figuring if there all going to shoot about the same and they are all around the same price and all look great why not get the one with 300$ grips on it?
