You mean J and K frames, right? I've been wrong before, but i don't think there are .22 L frames.
My J frames are a 34 and 43, both with 4' barrels, I recently got a 1949 Combat Masterpiece ( frame was numbered in '49, though literature says '50 or '51 start of production.
One's heavy, one's light, one's really light.

Target shooting and plinking around, with a little small game hunting

What's the 10-shot 617 considered? I thought all lugged bbls were going to be at least a L-frame?

L frames are heavy frames for regular use of .357 Mag and similar heavy loads. They have the same grip frame as the K frames, but a sturdier upper frame, with a bigger cylinder , the K and L frame .38/.357s require different speedloaders.
The other name for the 617 is the K-22, hint, hint.

N frame is the big magnum, and the X frame is the one with sling swivels.

define target shooting- if you are talking general use I'd go for the j-frame. if you mean what I consider real target shooting which is NRA bullseye, the K frame would be better.

i am more of a general use shotter. Between the .22's there is only a $50 difference between them but i dont know which one I would enjoy shotting more

I wouldnt get a new one as they have the crappy insulting keyhole lock on the side. Look for an older 34, 43, 17 etc without the lock. S&W sucks these days

Well, no, not actually. The 617 has a lugged bbl. That's a significant difference in design & that's why I thought all lugged bbl's were at least L-frames? But I think now my Model 617 is in fact no bigger than a Model 64/65/66 or 10/19.

the lug makes the gun too heavy and off balance for me- I'll take an old model 17 with the unlugged barrel- a true classic. in my area a good mod 17 can be found for a round 400 bucks

Get the model 17... 617 if you have to.

Don't discount the Model 63 & it's blued equivalent. I see these locally for around $400~. They're J-frames, so they'll fit a smaller handed shooter (ladies?) real well.

I put a set of these on my 63 & it allows my large hands to fit perfectly. They look good too.

A 517.  It's a K frame though.  Limited number of these were made.
