I am looking to get a p226 and have found one on consignment at a local shop. It's unfired and NIB just as it came from the factory. My question is, how can you tell the difference between the older "stamped" version and the new milled stainless slide version ??
Is there a serial number cut off to look for ??
Thanks

Quickest easiest way?...The milled slide is a lot more angular and squared.  Look at the back of the slide by the rear sight.  If its rounded off, its stamped, if it has a milled square edge, its...um, milled.  If the grips are checkered instead of stippled, its almost certainly a stamped gun.  The stippled grips came out just before the switch to the milled slides.

Check the extractor. Older ones are interal like a 1911, newer are visible external ones. Also, the newer ones will have stainless stamped on the slide.

There's also a slightly different feel to the two. The newer ones are, IMHO, slightly top heavy. I prefer the stamped slides. Just wanted you to know that whichever it is, it's still a great handgun.

The easiest way to tell....
Stamped/folded slides have a breech block at the rear of the ejection port, that looks like a seperate piece attached via roll-pin through the slide.

Milled are a single piece, with a solid pin through the slide.

If it has an external extractor, it's the new version.

Hmm, sparky and Hawkeye seem to disagree...

What do you mean?  They both said the same thing.  Newer ones have the external extractor.  Older ones have the internal extractor.

I'll confirm that the new milled versions have an external extractor and the old stamped versions have internal extractors.

Having said that, I still prefer the old version.  It is less "top heavy", balances better, and feels like more quality.

Forget all this extractor nonsense.  If it's the older stamped slide with steel breech block, you will note that the breech block is held in place with 2 concentric roll pins (i.e., one inside the other).  This identifies the older model with complete reliability.

BTW, I wouldn't worry about the stigma of a "stamped" slide.  I have one of the older 226s and it is a very reliable gun.  Only problem you'll encounter with Sigs is the crappy finish, and this can be remedied with a good refinish.  I had Paul of Armadillo Refinishing do a 2-tone teflon refinish on my 226.  Here's the result:
