All,
Boring post but I am looking for a recomendation for a basic 1911. My requirements: Government size 5" Park or other durable finish Good high vis sights or maybe nightsights Lowered, flared ejection port Good reputation for reliability Accurate (for a stock 1911) Eventually I might have a CMP or Bullseye conversion done on it. Nothing over $700 - what would be a fair price? Flared magwell might be nice but not essential Springfield comes to mind. Personally I have had a couple bad experiences with Colts in the past. I do not need beavertail, extended slide release, guide rod, kitchen sink, flux capacitor, etc.. Basically I am looking for a reliable, good shooting 1911 that - down the road - could be a good gun to build a competition gun on. Thanks |

Springfield or RIA are probably your only choices in that price range. You might get lucky and find a Kimber at the high end of your limit.
That's without nightsights, btw. FWIW...the consensus seems to agree with you regarding Colt. There are a few die hard loyalists, but the vast majority seems to think they're among the pporest quality 1911s and obviously the most expensive, feature for feature. Counterpoint, the Colt materials seem to be top notch, so they are good for smith work. |

Quoted:
Springfield milspec pretty much meets most if not all of your requirments. Not the GI, the milspec. you would have to look at the sticky post to be sure you are getting what you want because so many people advertise their GI's as milspecs. +1 If you're looking at Service pistol competitions Beavertail safeties aren't allowed anyway. You'll want black sights for bullseye, especially if you do any outdoor bullseye. |
