I have been in the military and combat arms for 10 years. I have a friend that has never shot handguns and he wants to purchase a handgun and have me teach him how to shoot. Teaching him how to shoot does not bother me as my job is to train indiginous forces about weapons and how to shoot and basic military tactics and guerilla tactics. With my extensive weapons experience I have formed my opinions of what I perfer to shoot and 9 times out of 10 i will reach for a sig. My problem is i need advice on putting my personal expectations aside and find him the best weapon to learn on. I reccomend a 9mm as they are fairly reasonable to pratice on price wise. My problem is reccomending the right brand for him. I know I want him to feel other handguns and see what is cumfortable for him but I do not want my love for sigs  to affect his choice. He wants a full metal frams so polymer is out of the question. I could defently use some advice on what to reccomend.

I'm in LOVE with my Baby Desert Eagle  Compact 9mm. Mine is an older model, which means it has a 1911-style safety, not the hammer-drop safety.
The insides are very much like a SIG (or so I'm told by my CCW instructor, who owns one).
This BDE is my primary CCW weapon btw.

if you want 1911 style controls on a 9mm i would suggest the cz75.  that is after all what the baby eagle is a copy of.  as far as brands i would suggest you have him fondle everything around--cz, ruger, s&w, sig, magnum research (baby eagle), eaa (witness & cz75 clone), taurus, kahr, springfield, beretta.  there are other brands too but i am tired and can't think of any of them.  after he fondles one ask him if it felt comfortable and if he could reach all of the controls etc well.  then have him hold another one and another and another.  after each one ask the same questions.  he might get annoyed but that is the best way to do it.  if he likes gun f better than all the previous, compare all the subsequent to it.

Probably a 9mm is a good place to start. I find myself using my Ruger P89 more & more to play with at the range. If he decides that this isn't his game He can sell the thing or put it in the closet & not be hurt too much $$ wise. If he doe's like it, Well, You know. We can't have too many gun's!

+1 on the Baby Eagle.  Mines a full size steel frame in 9mm, its a great gun although it is a heavy sucker.

As for what to recommend:  There are tons of guns out there, have him try as many as possible.  Sig, Ruger, S&W, Baby Eagle, EAA Witness, CZ, Taurus, Beretta, etc., all make metal framed guns and have decent reputations.
