So I'm looking to switch from the current SD rounds I run in my Gen3 Glock 23, to 180gr Federal HST's or 180gr Speer Gold Dots, as it seems they are pretty solid and on the list of SD ammo from the FAQ. I come here to ask for advice on how many rounds I should purchase in order to test that they will run reliably, and then obviously filling the magazines I carry to capacity. I asked this of some friends of mine and so far the only one to respond has said that he will usually purchase 500 rounds, have 300 to test fire and then the rest to fill 4 carry mags.

I was thinking of buying 100 rounds, shooting 50 to test, and then using the other 50 to load mags with. What say the ammo department? <If it matters I live in CA and only have 10 round magazines, and carry 2 mags [1 in gun, 1 on hip for now]>

Frankly, I like the HSTs between the two choices. If I had my "druthers" I would go with the 140 Grain Barnes bullet in whatever you find the cheapest. Try Ammo To Go. They have the Barnes Tac-XP bullet loaded by Black Hills for half the price of the Cor Bon stuff. Same velocity and everything, just cheaper. Besides you live in Commiefornia, the Barnes bullets are supposedly "Green" as they have no lead in them. Just think, you could be out killing bad guys and saving the planet at the same time!

Better decide fast if you want to order ammo. Some Dealers stopped shipping to CA already. I will not send any ammo after the 21st.

I run the 180 HST's in my G27 and, like everything else I've put in any of my Glocks, it runs just fine.  There's no way you need to run 300 rounds of carry ammo in your gun to make sure it works.  If it doesn't choke on 1 box (50 rounds) you should have no issues.  Premium HP's are too expensive to go through for me, and Glocks generally aren't picky.  If it were a 1911 I'd probably want at least 2 boxes through it before I'd carry a particular type of ammo but many 1911's are more ammo sensitive.

Yea this is kind of what of I was thinking, and verbatim on the price logic.

My life is worth a lot more than the cost of 300 HSTs (that are actually relatively cheap) I'm going to KNOW that it won't have issues. I like me that much.

500.
But I only run 50 rds through to test. I do run a full mag of my carry ammo once a month through the gun I am using. I just can't see why someone would need 200-300 or more JHP's to test a gun with.
If the gun is fine with FMJ ammo it should shoot higher quality ammo without a problem.  Only thing you need to confirm is that it feeds correctly. The HP doesn't jam on the feed lip or the mags. I would hope something that obvious would happen on rounds 3 or 4.

So why not run 5000 rounds through so you "know" you won't have issues?  Surely your life is worth $3k.  Mine is too, but reality dictates that after breaking a gun in with some off the shelf FMJ for a few hundred rounds you should have a good idea how reliable a handgun is.  After that run a box or so of the HP of your choice through it to make sure it feeds reliably and you should be GTG.

Nobody knows if round 51 or round 301 will be the one that doesn't feed (actually, that one should already be in the pipe so lets say 52 or 302).  All we can do is practice and buy the highest quality tools we can afford.

The little brown truck just dropped off some ammo for me to run through my new 9mm.

Play hypotheticals all day long, doesn't matter to me.  It's what I do because my experience is that a few mags isn't a good reliability test.

You live in California; buy as much of that 180 grain HST or Gold Dot as you can possibly afford, because it is more than likely that in several weeks, you will no longer be able to buy any online anymore and your costs for that sort of duty ammunition is going to skyrocket if you are forced to buy the civilian equivalents which are sold in 20 round boxes.

Buy it by the crate if you can, and in the very unlikely event that you experience reliability problems with it in your pistols; sell it or trade it away.

IMO; the greater risk you face is future unavailability; rather than poor reliability in your pistol.

And keep in mind that the ammunition you carry in your gun and spare magazines needs to be fired from time to time and replaced with fresh rounds.
