I took a slightly used, but new-to-me Browning High Power Practical to a pistol class this weekend. Gun had about ~200 rounds through it prior to me receiving it. This was my first use of the gun. I had zero problems with the gun (one ammo problem, though, not gun related). There were about 500 rounds fired. Normally I use a glock 19, but my wife has taken a liking to it, so I left that and went with the High Power, and was quite happy I did. I also have the FEG PJK, and while it's a decent gun, it's nowhere near as nice as the real deal. I did have one small problem, which was shooting one-handed I got bit. Bad. The first time I had enough skin pinched that the hammer wouldn't fall until I moved my thumb and pulled some skin out from between the hammer and grip. Ouch. So, I'm still in love with High powers. And i'm not yet 30 BobC. so there may be hope for a future generation. |
Hey Professor evil... Congrats on the new BHP. You made a very very wise choice. I bought a brand new Marklll about 2 months ago and after breaking it in with 600 plus rounds I have had zero problems. You must have a good size hand or that one handed shot is a health hazard. You can always replace the hammer with one of those commander (round) ones if it continues to be a problem or just shoot it with both hands only. I wish I could of found a Practical model because I really think there the coolest looking models, but I have the all matte black Marklll, and still like it alot and added some Spegel grips to mine which improved its looks enormously. Enjoy and keep me posted as to how this gun groups. John
My BHP Practical is my all time favorite handgun...The balance is perfect, grip angle feels great, and it fits my hand better than more modern double actions or Glocks. Did I mention that it has never malfunctioned???? If it's good enough for the SAS and FBI HRT team, it's good enough for me!!!!!
The hammer bite is only a problem when I grip high shooting one handed. That's a matter of practice. My grip was way too high. The hammer is a round model. The spur wouldn't have been thick enough to bite and grab like it happened....hard to describe. I still love it, the sites need a bit of adjusting, though.
John 232 about the zero problem. I bought a mark III a few years back that shot consistently to the left. The front sight was off just a bit. I couldn't drift it to save my life. Anyway I had a local gunsmith put on the factory adjustables and it has been superb since then. There is a real difference with the big front sight for me at least.
