Is it ok to dry fire this pistol with snap caps (or without) ?

The owners manual doesn't mention dry firing and I've seen various opinions about dry firing in my research  on the interwebs.

Thanks much for your replies !

You can dry fire with and without snap caps.

I dry fire the dogshit out of mine and it still goes bang when I need it too.  I never understood how certain guns can not handle dry firing, but handle the high pressure explosion of firing a live round.

Good point.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

You should only dry fire with snap caps. There is a roll pin that retains the firing pin and breech block. Dry firing without the snap caps damages this pin. Here is a link to SigForums  where they have pics of what I'm talking about.  SigForum/Sig armorer

OK, so after dry-firing 1,000,000 times you MAY need to replace a $0.50 roll-pin.

I am really not worried, I dry fire all the time and I never use snap-caps!

Good point.

I have seen some posts where Sig states it's ok without, but then the Sig Armorers say you shouldn't.  General statement I have heard, is it's ok if you're going to pull the trigger a couple of times but it is best to use a snap cap for any prolonged dry firing.

I have dry fired my 2 Sigs countless times without issue. In my opionion it is fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't know about the 220, but I can definitely state that the 229 cannot handle dry fire without a snap-cap. I broke the firing pin retaining pin very quickly.

Funny, I've dry-fired mine at least 10,000 times this year alone! I've never had any problems.

If I do break the retaining pin eventually then I will just install a new one. It really isn't a big deal.

Besides, the new retaining pin is probably less money than the cost of the snap-caps as an alternative!

Coltman77,

IM me your address and I will send you a set of .45 snap-caps next week. I broke my retaining pin, two snap-caps, and the firing pin spring in less than four months. Folks that never have any problems or never break parts don't use their guns much.
