I just bought a "loaded" Springfield PX9109L for just over 6 bills. I've always wanted a 1911 45. I'm a complete 1911 newb and I have a some questions: I just broke it down and it was a learning experience. I basically gave it a good cleaning and lube. Do these things like to run wet? It came pretty oily out of the box but just about any new gun does. Also, about the recoil spring plug; that thing is sharp. Pushing it in with my thumb seems like a dangerous proposition. Is there a "trick" to doing this? I just ended up putting a patch over the top of it. I'm also wondering if the front portion of the guide rod can be problamatic in that it might want to work loose under firing. Just wondering. Any thoughts on break in? Thanks for any input. Damn, I can hardly wait to put some rounds through this puppy. Regards. |

As far as lubing goes, if your going to the range, and for break in, I usually lube the rails up a little extra, otherwise a light coat on the internals for safe store or ready storage is just fine. Is it a full length guide rod? If so use a plastic bushing wrench. For break in, use extra lube as stated above. |

after you remove the screw-in full length guide rod, I use the flat back of a magazine to depress the plug...I usually have one of those handy, and I can never find my bushing wrench. I recently bought one of those Loaded models myself. The 'oil' all over the gun is actually packing grease becasue they didn't know how long it was going to sit on a shelf before being sold. A can of cheap carb cleaner will strip that stuff fast and easy, and won't hurt the finish. A few drops of oil to the rails, and a drop or 2 to the internals is all that's necessary. You don't have to disassemble the gun beyond field stripping to do this--just let the drops fall into the crack between the hammer and frame. You'll know when you have all the grease removed because the gun will start to look like a parkerized gun should instead of all black and shiny. Congrats on your purchase! If you like yours as much as I like mine, you'll be a satisfied customer! |

Looks like I'm going to have to pick up a bushing wrench. I field stripped it and gave it a good bath with Quick Scrub III and then rubben in some FP-10 and then put a couple of drops in the action/rails. I'll think I'll take it all done again and repeat the process just because it's so damn fun. |
Hell you think he's hooked now, wait till he takes it to the range! Lobowalk, bring twice as much ammo as you think you could possibly want to shoot when you take it to the range. |
......"I'd say so"
