I need to put new sights(fixed) on an old 1911 that shoots well, it's just not pretty. How do you determine the best height for the front sight?

If you go to the Brownells catalog (or similar retailer) and look at the listings for the rear sights that are compatible with the G.I. dovetail (there aren't that many) the catalog will typically tell you what height front sight is required to be compatible with that particular rear sight.  Novak and Millet are two suppliers of aftermarket sights that fit the G.I. (original 1911) dovetail without modifying the slide.

Another option is e-mailing or calling Novak Sight's & asking them. They're SUPER nice people & really know their stuff! For a nominal additional fee, they'll install your sights & then sight your gun in for you too. This little bennie saved me untold grief on one of my USP's. They told me they actually had to make a new front sight blade as none of theirs would work. That's customer service, IMO.

There is a way to figure it out mathematically, but I don't remember where I found it .

Maybe Google can help.
