Is it possible to get a full size 1911, and just replace the slide and barrel to 4in size? or is there more involved than meets the eye, IE a different frame, guide rod etc. Thanks in advance.

Speaking from my limited experience, I suppose if you really really wanted to you could, but just swapping the slide and barrel without modding them somehow, you will almost definetly run into a host of alignment problems.

May I ask why you don't just buy a commander size? (or build one if that's what you're up to)

possible...but not practical, cost effective, or imo, necessary

the slide/bbl/upper will have to be properly fitted AND all parts and systems must be ensured to work together (ie: you cant simply slop 2 diff uppers/lowers together and go with it)

well I only asked because my buddy is giving me one of his 1911, and its a full size model, but I kinda want a commander size for ccw seeing as Im not a big guy a full size would be hard for me to conceal.

Big +1 to that.  Give carryin' the 5 incher a try.  Really not that hard to conceal.  I carried a full-size for years............still do, when I'm not carryin' somethin' else.

The right holster makes the difference.  Concealing the barrel is easy with a IWB holster.
