Friend bought a N.I.B. 92 and out of the box it shoots low and I mean way low. Fixed sights. Is this a common problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check the shooter..check the crown...then call beretta

He shoots southpaw and I beleive I have read that that can be a problem for handgunners. Any special tricks to compensate for that?

Well, have someone else shoot the pistol first, maybe a range master, see if it is the gun or the shooter.
