I've been looking for a small pistol that would be easy to conceal in an ankle holster. Today I narrowed the search down to two "finalists". #1 is a Walther PPKS in .380. The grip fits nicely in my hand and I love the safety/decocker mechanism. I know .380 isn't the best self defense round, but at least it's not a .32acp. #2 is a S&W Airweight Bodyguard in .38spl. A small package that can be kept loaded for long periods and the shrouded hammer won't get snagged on clothing. Only five shots and a snubby barrel, but the .38spl packs a decent punch. Would like to hear opinions from anyone who has owned either gun. I don't think I can go wrong either way, but it doesn't hurt to ask questions beforehand. Thanks |

You said the PPK/s felt great in your hand, and you like the controls. I think you have your answer. .380 with a good bullet is a decent load. I'd prefer 9mm myself, but I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of either. Best thing you could do is shoot both and see which you shoot more accurately and rapidly. Personally, I do not like revolvers. |

I've owned a Walther PPK and it was a sweet little gun. Underpowered in my opinion for it's size, but at least it's reliable once you find the ammo type it likes. I admit I'm biased, I've gotten rid of all my .380's and .32's, I just don't consider them powerful enough to get the job done, they cannot offer both the expansion and the minimum penetration that I require for a SD gun. The least powerful carry gun I own now is a S&W .38 Bodyguard. Great little gun, my favorite pocket piece. Mine sports CT laser grips. My choice would be the snubby. More power, better ammo selection. |

Have you researched the downsides of the PPK/S? It fits your hand well, you like the placement of the controls. If you have, buy it. The S&W Airweight is a great choice too. I have always liked the PPK/S, but if given the choice, I would choose the .38 over it any day. |

I like the PPK. The safety is tough for me as it's backwards so I would carry with safety off. My wife actually carries one and likes it, she didn't like the handling of revolvers, Khar etc. Anyways, I have tried it in a ankle holster but the PPK is surprisingly heavy when on the ankle. Maybe this is a normal thing with ankle carry, I don't know. .380 isn't the best but it's better than the 45 that gets left home.... |
