After two months I finally made it to the range today!

Got to try out that old 65-5 I bought in Oct. from CDNN. (They are still advertising  them by the way.)

It's a 4" round butt model in excellent condition. I have wood grips and Uncle Mikes. I used the UM's since they are more comfortable and let your middle finger support the pistol better.

Used a box of 38 wc from S&B.

At 30' its very accurate and soft shooting. More of a "pop" than a bang. I found it shot a couple inches above POA though. So I just adjusted my sight picture to that. It's a real pleasure to shoot. Great DA trigger and excellent ergonomics.
Then I tried some Independence brand 357 magnum SP loads.
Woo-hoo! That was a startling difference from the 38 specials! And more accurate too! Now it was hitting at POA! I used a couple cylinders of magnums in it and was impressed.
But then I figured I'd take a break for something easier to shoot and used my .45 for a while. (PT745)
Those magnum loads DO get your attention!

I can now see why these pistols are becoming collectible. It is a really sweet shooter!

Hope y'all had some fun today too. Now I gotta get back to work!

Two suggestions, if I may?

1) Get yourself some wood fingergroove grips from Ajax Grips. These will make the gun unbelieveably accurate!

2) Try some .38spl wadcutters from GA Arms (or whomever). It's like shooting a .22LR with the coolest little cookie-cutter holes you've ever seen. Probably THE most accurate ammo you will shoot too, IMO.

Congrats on a great gun buy!

As I understand things, all fixed sight S&W .38's and .357's are tuned for 158 grain lead with a six-o-clock hold @ 25 yards.

That's how my M-13 3" works....same thing as your 65 in blue.

I was using S&B 38 special wad cutters and then some 357 mag SP ammo. Agreed taht the wc ammo is soft shooting. More like a pop gun!

Some of the wad cutters seem to blow through the paper side ways! Not always neat holes! But they are good cheap practice ammo.

I'll be checking the local gun show tomorrow for Ga. Arms. Their reloads have always worked well for me. I save my empty revolver brass and they give discounts if you trade that in.

I like the hard rubber in the Uncle Mikes grip for absorbing recoil and for a good supportive grip. For carry use, I'll fit the wood grips as they are less obtrusive. With it's combat style sights and my old eyes, I can shoot it accurately enough. But it's not a bullseye pistol for me. I would need three dot sights for that! I have no doubt it is more accurate than I am.

I have one as well. Very accurate. Don't shoot too many magnums, though. The K-frames aren't designed to take it. Occasionally a cylinder full a couple of times a year is really all you should do. They will loosen considerably after 100 - 200 rds or so of full power .357 magnums.

Stay with the .38 wadcutters. You can put tens of thousands of those through the gun with no problems (remember to clean frequently)

I clean after every range trip!

I have most of a case of 38 spec WCs out in the can. Two boxes of 357 to pick out of once in a while.

I agree. Everything I see says to use the 357s for occassional use. Practice with the 38 specs. It is just such a fine old pistol, I'd hate to beat it up.

I found a neat set of vintage Pachymar grips for it at the gun show in Va. Beach today! A bit less bulky than the UM grips but still with good finger support. There was alot of pistol stuff at that show today! Nice afternoon there!
