Does anybody have any knowledge of the ability to open carry in CA?

Open carry is legal, but carrying a loaded gun in public is NOT... ergo, you can open carry an unloaded gun .

Open carry (loaded) is legal in unincorporated areas, unless the county has also outlawed it.
Unloaded open carry is legal, but will get you hassled.

Heh, that's just a wee bit of an understatement...

As I said, it's open carry of a loaded firearm is only illegal inside city limits, and counties can also outlaw it if they want.  Go hiking up in the Sierras, no problem, Downtown LA, NO.

Yeah to everything. I lived in San Clemente while in the USMC. If you were to attempt 'legal open carry,' you would experience a shitstorm of panic from the general public on a daily basis. Not to mention you'd probably become intimate with local law enforcement.

You are from NY.  A Concealed Carry License is pretty damn easy to get in NY State...it takes between 6-9 months for approval, but once you get it, it's good for life. (minus a couple select counties which have 3 or 5 year expirations).

Plus, NY doesn't have crazy laws on where you can or can't carry...We CAN carry in bars, restaurants, churches, banks, sporting events etc.etc. and NO-GUN signs hold no weight of law.

The only restricted places are schools, courthouses, and NY City. Actually, we could carry in a school –– with permission from administration.

So don't trash NY too bad when it comes to CCW. At least we can get it after jumping through some hoops.

Oh and if you live in one of the NY counties that put hunting/target only "restrictions" on your license, they mean NOTHING as well...those are against NY State law...no criminal consequences for carrying with a "restricted" license.

Back to the original topic...Can someone find the article about the journalist that tagged along with a group of CA open carry guys, and they were politely questioned by the police...just checking that they were indeed unloaded. Good article if we can find it.

That's what I want to know too. Has anyone actually opened carry and was confronted by police and what their reactions were and exactly which counties and cities forbid open carry. I would love to know all these things.

The San Diego Reader recently posted a front page news article on Unloaded Open Carry (UOC).

Why would anyone carry an unloaded weapon around for everyone to see?

in ohio if you are going to cc your weapon MUST have at least one round in it to be legal.

i'm not sure about open carrying an unloaded gun in ohio legally, but mine will be loaded open or concealed regardless

Do the mags still have to be the 10 rounders??
7/28/2009 9:34:49 PM EDT
[#15]
10+ mags are good to go if you bought them before the ban in 2000. since there are no serial numbers and few mags are dated its pretty tough to disprove you didn't buy them preban. and I have been out unloaded open carrying twice in San Diego CA and haven't been hassled at all.

Magazines larger than 10 rounds are legal in CA.  It is simply illegal to import new ones after the ban date.  Thus for something newer like an XD(M) you would have to use a 10 round mag, since no pre-ban mags were ever made, whereas for say a Browning Hi-power there are lots of pre-ban mags available.

Please,
Point me in the direction where I can find the "target/hunting restriction" I have from Nassau county is against NYS law.
I carry most of the time, Although I always have "shooting supplies" and I'm a range officer at a local private range and have 24/7 access... So, I play the "game" to be "legal"... Thanks for the info

I beg to differ...your state (NY) is the epicenter of anti-gun issues.  NY has great politicians....F'n NOT!
