I have the Colt XSE Lightweight Commander stainless and want better traction/grip on the front strap. Been told of the options, and some even say it is too thin for modification safely...... so I have gone with a non-permanent solution that is easliy reversible.....skateboard tape. Please weigh in and let me know ytour opinions. Thanks

Not blazing a new path with that one.

People have been doing it for years.

Quick, easy and effective.

Have seen some Springers with machine cut checkering on the front strap which are alloy.  Might be worth calling Colt, a gunsmith or even Springfield. Believe it will work on any brand.

Skateboard tape will work well, especially if you anchor the edges under the grip stocks.

If your frontstrap has not been previously modified, there should be plenty of material to do at least 30 or 40 line checkering.   20 line can go pretty deep into the metal.

I certainly didnt think I was bursting with genious on the idea of using the tape, just don't see anyone talking about it and therefore thought I would ask. I am fairly new to 1911's and just not nearly as focused as GASPAIN as I just got done reading his build thread. Just getting warmed up to fixing bugs I have and not wanting to pay $160 to have the checkering done/also being told by a couple it can't or shouldn't be done on my factory frame..

Cost aside, did the people who said Don't checker your factory frame give a plausible sounding reason ?

When you checker a lightweight aluminum frame you just filed through the anodized hardened surface.

But as was pointed out to me....the front strap on that frame looks REALLY thin compaired to some makes.

Brownells sells a metal version of the skateboard tape you're talking about.  It anchors through the screw holes for the grip and put the grips on.

Would you happen to have a Brownells part number or catalogue page number for that product?

Thanks

I've got one of the metal pieces on my Warrior when I traded for it. I was told it was this one.

I've used skateboard tape for years.  When i first did it, I couldn't afford paying for checkering.  Now I see no reason to change.  I have it on both of the Springers i use for USPSA and on my LWT commander for daily carry.  Anchor it under the grips and change it out when it loses its bite.  If you don't like it, pull it off.  No damage, no refinish.

Jeez, $10 is certainly cheap enough to try.

That's cool.  Thanks!
