I have a .40 P226 and a 9mm P226. I know the barrel, spring/rod, mags will fit each other but is this all I need to do to swap and shoot?

entire top halves could be swapped, but its not reccomended- i was told once that the ejectors are set calber specific. however, sig sells 226 frames with 22 slides, and sends you a coupon to buy a 9, 40, or 357 top half, so presumably its not an issue.
id call sig and see what they say. i know for a fact the slide and barrel swaps between 40 and 357, but NOT 9. stay safe, and dont blow up a really awesome gun!

Dude, I don't know if you are trolling or drunk or what, but the barrels, recoil springs and mags (and the slides for that matter) do not interchange between a .40 226 and a 9mm 226. If you must, the two models use the same guide rods so you can exchange them with carefree abandon.
Keep your gun parts separate, and you'll be fine. |

If you must, None of the above. The mag fits into the gun and I assumed the barrel would swap but haven't taken either gun out of the holster to check since I wanted to ask first. I didn't think you had to be drunk to assume all P226 lowers would match the uppers
ETA: I just checked and the uppers and lowers do fit together. What are the differences between the two? |

It may be the way you are asking the question.
What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to put the slide and all parts including the barrel, etc. from a 9mm 226 on the frame of a .40 226? Or, are you wanting to swap individual components between a 9mm 226 and a .40 226, i.e., installing a 9mm barrel in a .40 slide? As I said in my original post, 9mm and .40 226 parts are not all interchangeable. The barrels especially are different because a .40 slide is beefier to handle the recoil of the .40 cartridge. The recoil spring on a .40 is stiffer for the same reason. If you lay a .40 226 mag beside a 9mm 226 mag, you will see how the .40 mag tapers towards the top, while the 9mm mag does not. 226s made about the same time should have comparable frames. So, a 9mm 226 slide should work on a .40 226 of the same vintage and vice versa. SIG has made slight changes in the frames over the years so a 9mm 226 frame from, e.g., 1987 might not work with .40 226 slide from 2006. So, once again, please enlighten us as to what you are trying to accomplish by swapping parts. |

Mine LOOK identical but I didn't want to do anything to damage these guns so that's why I'm trying to avoid an $1800 mistake.
The factory sells caliber conversion kits. It's well known you can swap calibers on a 226. The frames are identical. Google 'Caliber X-Change kit'. |

...Now shooters can add SIG SAUER centerfire performance with just the change out of the slide assembly, barrel, recoil system, and magazine to any of the standard production pistol calibers; 9mm, .40S&W, .357SIG, or .45ACP (availability varies by model). Exchanging components does not alter the reliability or accuracy of either assembly. Each SIG SAUER X-CHANGE Kit features SIGLITE Night Sights, one magazine*, and a hard carry case...
