What is the difference in these? They accept the same mags so I assume the grip size is the same.
I know the 228 is 9mm only and the 229 is also .40 and .357 sig. What I will be purchasing is a 9mm. Any real differences? Not concerned with what either "used" to be. I am referring to new production only. Thanks for any help. Terry |

Slides are different. The 228 uses the old style folded carbon steel. The 229 uses amilled stainless, the reason being it was designed around the 40. Higher pressure, needed a stronger slide.
The 228 will be lighter, but only a couple of ounces. The 228 was only made in Germany, the 229 is made over here. Some believe there is a major difference in quality. If you're going to buy a nine I'd suggest the 228. It was designed and built for the nine. |

I am waiting to see if I am getting a 228R off the EE. Waiting to see if the person that responded before me is going to take it. Then I found a 229R for about the same price. Sig's website does not list the 228R, although I see them for sale alot so I am sure they are not limited in production. And I figured since all the ones I see have the light rail they must be new models/production. Terry |
| 228 was discontinued with the advent of the 229 in 9mm. I believe the slide on the 228 is not as strong as the 229, since the 229 was designed to the .40sw and .357 sig loads that add considerably more wear and tear to the gun. I think the 228 slides were stamped, while the 229 slide are forged. Don't quote me on this, but it is what i recall from my sig owning days. |
