| are these a good deal for $500 ? |
|
Yes. I bought my non CPO 228 (three mags, no box or papers, usable night sites) a couple years ago for $400, but that was a "friend's" price at the dealer I use. Not the easiest thing to find anymore. Mine was good and used. Still, its been as accurate as any other nine I have, 100% reliable. Slide has faded to that SIG grey that older SIGs seem to acquire. Curiously the frame looks almost new. 1991 vintage. |
Please don't take this comment as pompous or arrogant, but us military and law enforcement types have plenty to dislike about the 9mm. Most of the local police departments are moving over to .45, as is the NY state troopers. I'll only use one anecdote that recently happened in my life... My good friend's brother-in-law was a town LEO not too far from here... about an hour north. He made a routine traffic stop, the guy was a noted scumbag and drew down on him. This cop was able to draw and squeeze off three rounds from his 9mm Glock (not sure if it was a 17 or 19), all finding their target CENTER MASS. The scumbag squeezed off several shots as well, and ONE found its target on the PD collar device and caused a rupturing of an artery at the base of his neck. He bled out before the ambulance arrived. The noted scumbag, with two holes in his chest and one in his gut... lived to see the inside of a jail cell. I'm not saying that 9mm can't be lethal or a good self-defense round, but after that event, I would rather put my money into .40 or .45 weapons. Just a matter of personal choice. I have a couple of 9mm pistols around, I just wouldn't use them for a carry piece. All of you 9mm fans out there, please don't take this post as an attempt to insult your round of choice. I'm simply saying I personally prefer something with a little more umph behind it, and that's why I wouldn't buy a 228 or 225. |
No offense takin Huck,... Im sure one can find plenty of accounts of multiple solid .45 caliber hits failing to stop. My favorite sig is my 220 so I like my big bores too. If I had a large department suppling me with .40s&w thats what Id shoot. As it is i can afford to shoot mass quanties of 9mm and roll my own .45. Ensuring my ability to properly place my first and any follow up shots well. FWIW the early stamped slide Sig's balance a lot better for me than the new milled guns. |

Yes it is, and caliber wars will never end, so don't sweat it. I've seen many more people killed with 9mm than I have with 40 cal in officer involved shootings. I've also seen people walking around with a .45 slug in their head. I'm not talking internet rumor, I'm talking first hand info on calls I've handled. |
Something that I posted earlier in another topic regarding 9mm/.40/.45... First off, I sure as shit wouldn't want to be shot by a 9mm, or any projectile save .68 caliber paintballs. 9mm is faster, .45 is bigger. There are things to be said for both higher speed as well as increased frontal surface area (especially after expansion). They both have effects on the trauma cavity created. As far as more people being killed with 9mm, it may be due to the 9mm being more widely dispersed (especially amongst criminal circles)... just a hunch. During my next deployment to Iraq, however, since I'm not allowed to bring a personal sidearm, I'll be sure to tuck a few boxes of +P 9mm into my gear. We can discuss calibers all day, but I don't think many would disagree that hotter loads are a bit more potent. |

Go for it! Even if the market is 'tight' on 228's right now, they'll still be a great investment should a bunch get into circulation. I picked one up (CPO) for $499 at a local show a few weeks ago. Now my local fun shop is holding another one (CPO) for me!!!! Both are in excellent condition (I'd say 98% - no slide wear, no dings, no dirty grip screws, mint bores, no 'Sig smileys' on the bbl.) and my first one is dead-on accurate! Get it and practice, practice, practice
