I've read through the other posts and none seem to be exactly what I'm experiencing.  If I'm wrong let me know.

So I bought a brand new P22 a couple of months ago to plink around with.  Probably put 60-70 rounds through it.

From the first mag, to the last mag shot, I was having FTF on the first 3-4 rounds.  After getting home and field stripping I was able to compare the tension on the recoil spring, to the tension on a fully loaded mag, and I believe the mag spring creates too much tension when fully loaded for the weak recoil spring to close the slide.

I have two brand new mags, same issue with both.

For now, I've loaded both mags and hope this will weaken those mags spring a bit.

Anything else I should be doing?

I'd say try polishing the feed ramp.

What ammo? The P22 is somewhat picky

+1 on this, mine only seems to run 100% with CCI Mini-mags, or Stingers.  Runs pretty good on bulk pack stuff, but not perfect.

With CCI I haven't had a single problem. 1 FTF with Blazer .22 and none with Remington Golden Bullets either.

Yep... Remington Golden Bullet or CCI MiniMags for mine... Golden Bullet has bad primers once in awhile but is much cheaper than MiniMags

I was using both CCI Mini-Mag and Stingers.  Before I bought the gun I had read how finicky the gun can be with other brands.  I'd also read how dirty the barrely can get with no jacket rounds.  So I know enough to not make that mistake.

What's odd about this problem is that the gun will start feeding correctly after round 2, 3, or 4 and every shot thereafter feeds and chambers without any issues.

P22 Bible

This is good advice, thanks.

I had read the Bible and DL'd some time ago.  I was hoping to get some ideas from other owners before I started mod'ing the gun.  But it sounds like these little tweaks really help...

Have you tried more than one magazine? Have you tried loading only 4-5 rounds in a mag to see if that makes a difference?

Update...

Thanks everyone for your ideas!

I had taken to a smith a few weeks ago and just got it back today.  They were super cool but unable to resolve the problem.  The smith said these guns are "hated" in the shop!  He did the feed ramp polish (very conservative b/c he didn't think the rounds were sticking on the ramp) and filed the hammer a bit.  He shot through several mags and thought it was better but it still hung some of the time on a fresh mag.

He recommended I contact S&W and get service under the warranty.

Anyone have an advice before I call?  Any idea what I'm dealing with?  This will be my first experience with S&W––lots of experience with Sig.

Well, you certainly can't go wrong with calling S&W; I haven't dealt with them, but I've heard that they have fantastic customer service, at least for the P22.

The only other thing I might suggest is posting your problem over at the Walther section on rimfirecentral.com.  There are some sharp folks there, most notably M1911 who is the guy who wrote the material in the P22 Bible.  If they can't solve it there (and I'll bet they can), then S&W is your best bet.

Update...

Walther/S&W is sending out free postage.  They were really cool on the phone.

I've checked out rimfirecentral and there is a TON of info over there.  I'll keep reading.  I don't want to post anymore until I know something from Walther.  I'm hoping they know exactly how to fit it.

Update...

Took about a week to get the FedEx label in the mail.

Shipped it 10/22 got it back today––about a week!

Enclosed was a note stating the gun had been serviced by Smith & Wesson "BY CHARGE-ESTIMATE PENDING," they had replaced the trigger bar, and tested.

I loaded up some .22s and it is feeding fine now.  Slide is dropping on the first round and all subsequent rounds without any hang-up at all!  How the trigger bar came into play is beyond me––precisely why I won't be doing any of the Bible mods.

I'll call them tomorrow and see what kind of charges I'm looking at.  Not sure why they would charge me since I just bought the gun new in May?!?

Update (again)...

S&W said there is no charge and the service invoice just printed that way.

I am covered for a year under the warranty so I'm going to try and take this little guy out much as possible to make sure we're good.
