| The gun was sent back to S&W and I was given a new gun after nearly 6 months of phone calls and emails. Poor customer service IMO. I really only got somewhere when I asked for the gun back as it was to take to send to the SHOT shot with a buddy of mine that is a Browning Rep. |
| The orentation of the crack is just behind where the recoil spring was held by the slide. I have only seen the 5in models crack but I have heard of the standard model doing the same thing in the same place. I think the slides are just made of an inferior material and S&W does not care about your safty enough to call a recall and produce a better slide so this does not happen. It is going to take a bad accedent for anything to be done or enough people emailing them about this problem b4 they address the issue. |
Agreed. Something like a cheaper metal diecast with minimal if any real steel. Basically "Pot" or "White" metal: I assume they'd figure that a 22lr is not a high energy metal stressor, so some cost saving enginneering group decided on a cheaper alloy figuring it'd hold up just as well. Nice cost saving methodology. "POT" "White", or zinc diecast metal is what high class (all metal) airsoft guns are made of, and they break too. Very similar to the pics of this and other P22s. Metalurgic information: This alloy has an Ultimate Tensile Strength of 40ksi, a density of 0.24 lb/in3, and a melting range of 718-728 deg F. The manufacturers data sheet claims that it has relatively good "Strength, hardness and creep properties". Pot metal is known for its instability over time, as it has a tendency to bend, distort, crack, shatter, and pit with age. The low boiling point of zinc and the fast cooling of the newly-cast part often allow air bubbles and zinc oxide to remain within the cast part, weakening the metal. |
Or, how about the back of the recoil rod lug on the slide bottoming out on the frame if the recoil spring is a little weak? Or maybe both... |
Sorry man, yes I agree that it sucks and I hope you get it resolved. Too bad this crap has to happen, whatever the reason. |
| sounds like a personal problem... my P22 never gets cleaned, just oiled and I have 10,000 plus rounds through it... I get maybe 1 or 2 jams for every brick I go through... I have the 3.5 inch... and dude... S&W revolvers are the best revolvers Made... so You must have done some serious shit to make it blow up on you... |
I was thinking the same thing. Crack is in an odd place to be related to the BE |
Because the 10/22 is a superior handgun to the P22? I've got about 2500 rounds through my P22, mostly Federal and Remington bulk from Walmart. About 90% of it suppressed. No problems so far. It's been a fun little gun for the price. I'm not encouraged by their response should I have a problem in the future though. |
