I purchased a new Ruger P95 for a house gun based on very positive experience in the past with a P85. I took the pistol out to the range for first time and through 2 mags with 115gr Winchester white box FMJ I had at least 5 failures to extract & eject the fired round. The P95 would pick up a round from the mag and jam because the round in the chamber had not been extracted and ejected. Should I continue to fire the P95 in hopes that it will correct itself after 100-200 rounds or do I need to get the gun to Ruger and let them figure it out? Just in case, I am going to disassemble for cleaning and give the chamber area and the boltface some extra attention with a brush.

I'd say go with the full teardown and lube (and check the ejector), and try using heavier bullets - 124, 127 or 147-grain, and run some more rounds through it. The gun might be a little tight and the 115-grain doesn't impart enough velocity to the slide to cycle it properly. I've never heard of a Ruger that needed some break-in, but then again I've never owned a P95. My P89 was bought new and has been dead-nuts reliable for 17 years with 15,000+ rounds through it. If it's still like that after 200 rounds, send it back. ETA - spelling |

As an update- disassembled the pistol and paid full attention to the boltface and chamber with loads of Hoppes and a brush. Shot the beast today and with Winchester white box 115gr fmj only had 2 failures to eject out of 50 rounds. You may be on the track with the bullet weight thing. I then loaded 2 mags full of Winchester Ranger 124gr HP and got 20 round out with absolutely no malfunctions. Will contine with the 124 grain + bullet weights and really pay attention to cleaning details. |
