I just bought a .40 PX4 sub-compact, this is the first pistol I've had since I became a quadriplegic and I've only had experience on .45s I used in the army. If I have one in the chamber, is it safe to use the "decocker" on the right side of the slide to lower the hammer down? It seems to hit awful hard when I put it down on a empty chamber, and I don't want to put any more holes in the wall, as it makes my wife mad. She's already mad because I bought this as a Christmas present, so I don't want to piss her off any more than she already is.

I have the PX4 in full frMe and sub compact, both in 9mm. I LOVE this gun!

As for your question, YES, it is just fine to use the decocking lever. If you look at where the hammer falls when you have the hammer locked back, it strikes a small piece that moves forward and hits the firing pin forward into the primer (its more complicated than that, but very basic breakdown) when you turn that decocking lever, it moes that piece out of the way and the hammer strikes the decocking mechanism, not the actual moving piece.

To prove this, clear your weapon. Now, put it on fire, manipulate the hammer to the locked position. Now hold the hammer with your thumb and swing the decocking lever to the safe position. Watchthe decocking/safety mechanism swing and make the hammer inefective.

I had the same worries and figured this out by simply handling the weapon.

Thanks for the info, I really like the way this pistol feels in my hand. I only have three fingers that work on my right hand, but I feel confident that I will be able to handle it if needed as a belly gun. I hope to be able to go shoot it soon!

They are very nice guns, also much softer shooters than others in their caliber because they have a buffer in them

I agree the recoil of my PX4 seems far less my other .40 S&W handguns. As stated you can drop the hammer with out issue.
