Has anyone bought a P-5 from Southern Ohio Gun lately? I would be interested in learning their condition.

Thanks!

I bought my surplus P5 from SOG about a year ago.  I think the price was around $429.00.

The pistol was described as "excellent" and arrived in somewhat less condition.  Internally it was as new, externally it had visible slide wear.  SOG is the sole determiner of "grade" and guess they have a different view than I of what "excellent" constititues.

Having said that, I called SOG and sent them pictures of my P5 and they immediately offered to exchange the P5 for another one, or reimburse the money I had paid. (Incld the $15.00 handpick fee).

I had already fired my P5 and it functioned perfectly, and was poa/poi right out of the box.  I didn't see any sense in going to all of the trouble for an exchange when while I might have wound up with a "visably prettier" pistol it might not have been as good internally, or shot as well.  So, SOG refunded my $15 handpick fee, and we let it go at that.

I have no problems with SOG as IMO they were very quick to offer a resolution to my problem.  I would buy from them again, and I would always pay the extra "handpick" fee.  It might not do you any good, but then again it could make a difference.

The Walther P5 is a unique firearm in my opinion..  High quality, hard to find at a reasonable price, and imo a nice addition to any Walther lovers inventory. (I have a surplus P1, P99c/AS, and P99/AS).

If you aren't happy with the pistol SOG sends you I feel sure you will have to problem returning, or exchanging it.  That's a better deal than you would get from a retail dealer, or personal transaction..

Best Wishes,

J. Pomeroy

Does the P5 use the same mags as the P38/P1?

Unfortunately no. The P5 mags are almost the same as the P-38 mags except the P5's are slightly shorter in length. Also as a side note, the P5 Compact pistol uses the standard American mag release button on the left side behind the trigger guard so they to are different. So you have three mags that are very similar but not interchangable. The P5 mags are also not as abundantly available as the P-38's and even used mags are going for a premium.

Thanks for the clarification.

I bought one from sog about a year ago and it was in a little better condition than the picture in the second post.  It shoots fine and the barrel and internals look great.

I got a triple k mag for the p5 and it has functioned just as well as the factory ones, the fit and finish just wasn't as good.

That's interesting to know. I didn't know that new manufacture mags existed. At least somebody (although my first choice wouldn't be Triple K) is making repros for this great pistol. And as long as they work why not?

Gun Test Magazine did a write up on them last month and gave them very good marks.
