single action shots every time.  Double action misses about %10 of the time. (one in ten)
I get light primer strikes.  Sometimes fires, sometimes not.
I love this gun and would love to carry it-but i can't as is.
Would you?
Any help would be appreciated.

The best thing to do is have a gunsmith look at it.

Did you buy it new or used?  If you bought it used, often times "Bubba" will try to get a lighter trigger by loosening the mainspring tension screw.  It gives a lighter trigger, but also lighter hits on the primer and obviously isn't the right way to do a trigger job on a S&W.

If the tension screw is loose, tighten it up.  90% of the time on a used gun, this is the trouble, and the above is why.

The tension screw is the little screw in the front grip strap.  It's the only screw in the front grip strap.  Don't go ape on the screw either, it's bering against the mainspring, so it's not going to torque up like lug-nuts on a car or something.  Just tighten it up and see what happens.

If that's not it, to the gunsmith it must go.

I think the mainspring is weak.  I had the same problem with my SS L-frame 696.  I changed the factory mainspring to a Wolff to get a lighter trigger pull, and this cause the gun misfiring sometimes.

Having the same problem with my model 49

I will try the screw first then get a new mainspring.  I love this pistol.  But my wife has claimed it now

Oh well I guess I can still shoot it

I swapped out the mainspring as well as the rebound spring on my 686 to lightened version and had some issues with my reloaded ammo.  I use Winchester primers and was getting erratic ignition.  I swapped over to Federal primers and they work fine.  The Federals are said to have the softest cup material and a lot of guys shooting tuned whellguns use them for that reason.

I have since started to pay more attention to the seating of my primers and found the Winchesters are working fine now.
