So I let a fellow collegue barrow my AA conversion kit this weekend. Its a 3 year old kit and is the 17/22 LE model. I cleaned and lubed the kit prior to giving it to him. He's an experienced shooter and knows guns well. I got the kit back from him this morning and he shows me a couple of cases he saved from the range.
Both cases were Remington Golden Bullets (550 Bulk Pack). I have shot this in my kit with great results and no casing issues or failures. The first case was missing the entire base of the cartridge. It had sheared off and left the entire casing in the chamber. The second casing had a noticeable crack in the top (mouth) of the fired casing. He said he had three or four more cracked cases like this that day. He said the malfuntions started after at he was at least half way through the bulk pack. He fired 540 rounds in his range session, as he had left one of the extra magazines at home by accident that he had pre-loaded. I have fired about 250 rounds in a range session (no cleaning) without problems, but never a whole box without cleaning. He wiped the the kit down before giving it back to me, so no idea how filthy it was at the end of all those rounds. Could some of this been a result of the carbon build up and fouling or could it be an ammunition issue? Any other ideas? |

Wow, sounds like an ammo issue to me. Those Golden Bullets are supposed to be THE ammo of the AA conversions. I've always had great results with them.
My 19/23 AA conversion is sitting on 500 rounds right not without cleaning. It has over 3,000 rounds total. I just got back from the range and ran 100 rounds through it with zero malfunctions. I've had 3 malfunctions in the past 500 rounds, all of which are the black and silver box CCI Blazer ammo. I'm very happy with the kit. For additional info, I'm lubing the kit with Mobil1 V-Twin 20W-50. The kit, my Glocks, and my ARs all run great on the oil for many many rounds. I can't imagine the case base separation, or the case crack, being anything related to the kit. I think ammo quality is just continuing its downhill plunge. |

Update: After also posting this in the rimfire forum and checking the kit, I found that the barrel is bulged approximately 2/3 of the way from the chamber. So my guess is a obstructed barrel (maybe a squib load) and a follow up shot that bulged the barrel. The slide appears fine. So its $50.00 for a new barrel. I've had nothing but great luck with the Remington Golden Bullets in this kit and that is what my coworker was shooting in it. I've had no hiccups from day one with this kit and followed AA's instructions in lubing and cleaning the kit. So now I wonder about using remington ammo again. CCI is still cheaper than 9 or 40. But some guys dont like CCI either. |

Sounds like issues I've had with just about every ammo in my kit. (on g3 G19). Golden bullets run the best of all the ammo types but they do do that. You could say I am not pleased with my AA kit. If I keep the chamber clean and dry of oil, and the rail tabs lubricated, mine functions fine. The CCI mini mags work best and are the most accurate. The Fed Auto Targets work good, and the Goldens work the worst. Shoot ten Goldens, and the ejection will come out in ten different directions due to different powder charges. If you think those are bad, the Rem thunderbolts will lead the crap out of the barrel, and work as poorly as the Goldens, but at a lower price. The only thing decent about the Thunderbolts is that you can shoot some plated bullets afterward, and the barrel will magically unlead itself. |
