Got it in a trade with my brother.  He has owned it since 1987.

Would you shoot .38 Special only, or go .357 Mag every once in a while?

I want to keep it as nice as possible and have read up on the so-called Python "weak action".

Thanks!

Personally, I would probably only shoot .38 in it.  But thats because its always been kind of a grail gun to me (the kind I know I will most likely never get to own ) so I would most likely baby it.  Thats just me though.  If you want to use if for self defense, Then sure.  But if I really wanted a magnum blaster, I would prolly get a Ruger or something.  Cheap(ish), plentiful, and solid as a rock.

THose things are like unicorns anymore.  I have never even seen one in person.

The Python frame and cylinder are extremely strong, so there's no reason not to shoot Magnum ammo through it.
That's what it was made for.
It's not a S&W "K" frame that was made for limited use with Magnum loads.

If accuracy is your thing, shoot 148 grain wadcutter Mid Range Target loads.

I probably wouldn't shoot a huge amount of heavy 357 loads through it, but shooting full powered 357 ammo through it once in a while shouldn't hurt it.  Since you want to "keep it as nice as possible" (and I would too), I doubt you'll be shooting it thousands and thousands of rounds anyway.

mine made in 63 I shoot 38 mostly anf have put less than 40 rounds of 158 grain 357 through it but I shoot my S&W 27 & 28  when I run my handloads.

pythons are not as delicate as many say but do not dryfire it on an empty chamber get some snap caps.

If I'm remembering correctly 8" nickel was only made one year and in relatively low numbers maybe 10k or so.

Nice gun.

I made the mistake of going to Guns America last night. Damn, are they proud of their Pythons! Listings went from$2,000 to $9,000!

My first pistol was a NIB 6" Python in 1981. Just wish that damn bi+€& of an ex-wife hadn't gotten her grubby paws on it and sold it!!
