I asked this in the Carolinas forum for a more location specific answer, but I'm hoping you guys can help me here too...

Just some curiosity here, because this seems too good to be true.

Was talking to one of my Squad Leaders this weekend about guns, shooting etc, and we got on to talking about concealed carry. I mentioned that for my 21st birthday to myself (in August) that's a gift I'm giving myself. I'll take the closest class I can find to August 18th and get my CCW ASAP.

He told me though, that it's possible for me to take my CCW class now (say, in June), file for my CCW, and receive it after I turn 21, or somewhere around my birthday because of the usual two month delay. This would be great, because we're looking at Pro-Mobilization somewhere in October, so if I have to wait until August, I might not actually get my CCW.

I'm curious as to how true this is. Seems way too good to be true, but I know some of you conduct CCW classes and would know better than I.

Thanks!

I think it depends on the class....I've never seen an age requirement.  It makes great sense and all with the long waits some counties have.  Best thing would be to check with some of the places that offer the class to see what the age limit is.

Thanks Wahoo. I've noticed some classes have an age requirement, but I wasn't sure if this was a legal thing or a CYA thing. Anyone know?

I understand...best resource would be the instructor.  I'll be stopping into one of the class providers today for someting else and I'll ask if it's law while I'm there. Will get back to you on it later.........

Thanks Wahoo! I'm going in June with a friend of mine (now that I know I can) so info from you sooner is better.

So, I'm reading the NC Firearms Laws booklet from the NC DOJ and I've noticed something interesting...

According to this:

The sheriff has ninety (90 )days from the time all application materials are received to
either issue or deny a permit. N.C. Gen. Stat. ยง 14-415.15(a) In order for an applicant to
be approved, he/she must:
...
3. be at least 21 years of age;

What I'm wondering is if I'm able to apply at 20, and if my birthday falls in that 90 day period, be approved later on.

Has anyone tried this, or know of someone who has? If I have to wait, I have to wait. It would just be nice to get some use out of it before I'm unable to carry. Not to mention, dealing with this when I got back would not be on my list of priorities.

You can take the class at 20, can't apply for the permit till 21.

I waited till I was 21 to take the class cause I didn't have handgun to take it with till I turned 21, but I did have two friends who took the class before their 21st with their dad's pistols and then applied after their 21st birthday.

Where are you located?  I can suggest a great place up in Watagua County (just oustide Boone, NC) if that's within reasonable driving range.
