I've been thinking about picking up a Glock for a while, and am hung up on which model might be the smarter choice.
It's between the 17 and the 19. It will be for CC, HD and range time. I currently carry a XDm 3.8 everyday, and prior to that a full-size XDm (which now lives in a glove box). I've never had any issue or complaint with carrying the XDm 4.5, so I'm comfortable with a full-size. Thoughts on either the 17 or 19? And for the picture request, I'd really like to see the 19 with a 15, 17 and 19 round magazines, for comparison. Thanks! |
| Between the two models you listed I'd go with the 19. I've had the sub-compact, compact, full-size and practical/tactical models. Of those, my favorite are the 19/23 and 34/35. The compacts seem about the perfect size and with the full-size IMO you don't gain enough barrel length or sight radius to justify the loss of concealability. |

Thanks for the replies and comparison pics. I would guess a Model 19 with a 17 round mag inserted is essentially the same height as a Model 17, correct? Correct This also applies to a G19 magazine with a factory +2 extension. I'd just get the one that fits your hand the best, and aims the most natural. Really can't go wrong with either. |

Thanks again, guys.
I spent an hour in a local shop today comparing the two every way I could. The Gen. 4 Model 17 was the most comfortable out of the 17s and 19 that I handled. I liked the the more aggressive texture on it, and the wider mag release was preferable to me over a Model 17L that had the extended mag release. The Model 17 definitely felt better in my hands than the Model 19. And the taller frame was actually shorter than my Xdm 3.8, taking the overall height into account, so I believe it would conceal a little better as well (even though I really don't have any issue with the Springfield). Comparing the various magazines in the Model 19 made it apparent the 15 rounder was obviously optimum for conceal-ability purposes, with the +2 extension feeling unnatural and giving up the benefit of the shorter Model 19. Again, the Gen. 4 Model 17 felt best and pointed very naturally (I spent a good 30 min. just holding the different models at ready and aiming). Now I need to decide if the cost of a new system is worth it... Feel free to play Devil's Advocate with my wallet!

The 33s are more vehicle carry size. It's a pita to hold a flashlight and cellphone steady. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4103/5037272393_0350a8b3f5_z.jpg Lol, nice. If no other reason for getting a Glock, 33 rd mags... Bad ass. |

Two more questions: Are there factory 19 round mags, or are they all 17 round mags with a +2 extension? And are Gen. 3 and 4 mags compatible with one another? I've heard yes and no. Thanks! Yes, all 19 round mags are just 17 round G17 mags with +2 extensions. There isn't an actual 19 round mag. Yes, Gen4 and earlier mags are interchangeable. The only thing that doesn't work is when you try to use Gen3 or earlier mags in a Gen4 that had the mag release switched to the other side. |
