Do all gen 4 glocks have the interchangeable backstraps and/or RTF?  I'm thinking of another G19, but I want gen3 not gen4, and I'm looking for an easy way to differentiate.

I think all the GEN4's  say "GEN4" on the slide.

All Gen. 4's have the modular back-straps and the RTF2 texturing. Also, a larger and reversible magazine catch.

+1

Also they have a big "19Gen4" on the side of the slide like mentioned above.

Hopefully they just do away with the compensated models totally.

Are the Gen 4's the same quality as older models? I've read internet chatter about Glock doing away with the Tenifer finish in favor of a cheaper one, and using more MIM parts than before? Any truth to that or are they good to go?

The generation 4 texturing is not RTF2 (the more sandpaper like texture) it is a new generation of texture but what it is referred to I do not know.  I am however certain that RTF2 was limited to generation 3 weapons.

My 17 is a monster, g2g out of the box, no issues what so ever.

Correct.

Gen 1 = non-RTF
Gen 2 = RTF1
Gen 3 = RTF1 and RTF2
Gen 4 = RTF3

RTF2 has been discontinued for civilian sales, but is still available as an option on Gen 3 Glocks for LE/Gov sales.
