Hello all... I have a Rock Island Armory compact (Officer's sized) M1911 style gun, and it has never quite run right. At first the gun had problems with both FTE and FTF. I replaced the extractor with a Wilson extractor, and the FTE was cured immediately. It still has FTF issues, in spite of me having polished the ramp and chamber to a mirror-like gleam. During a FTF, the rounds seem to hang up about halfway into the chamber, as if there is something hanging them up on the top surface of the chamber (there is no burr or other issue there). I only have one more idea. I tend to run my guns pretty dry, just a q-tip of lube on the slide rails, then run over with dry q-tip to pick back up about 60% of what I put on. Is it possible I'm running it too dry? I have shot 1911s for about twenty years, and have not had this kind of ongoing FTF issue before. Usually the gun will run 25-50 rounds fine and then start having FTFs every 2-10 rounds. Thanks! |

I prefer to run them a little dry, but unless you do your lube procedure and go to the range then and there, that's too dry. I would add lube as necessary and look into the following: - Tune extractor - use Wilson Combat magazines - Replace recoil spring (and be sure to change it every 1-1.5K rounds) If these measures aren't getting you anywhere you should send it in for service. It isn't the best of times to bring this up, but you picked a more demanding design known to cause problems with "lesser" outfits, and you did so with the cheapest manufacturer out there. You may be in for one hell of a ride trying to get this thing to work. |
