I have not seen much on ARFCOM on the new R.O. Operator, so I figured I would do a quick review.   I will start this off by establishing my experience in the 1911 world...  My first 1911 was a Springfield TRP non-rail back around 2008, and I immediately fell in love with the platform.  I started using it in 3-gun and IDPA with great results, and over time I acquired a couple Sig 1911's and a Springfield Loaded through trades, but they all got traded back off because they didn't offer any advantage over the TRP I already had.  A couple years ago I decided to sell my TRP and use the funds to upgrade to a railed version (stupid), however the funds got diverted and it never got replaced...

Fast forward to last week, I worked some OT and decided to pull the trigger on the R.O. Operator since it was such a good value (I paid $799 on GB with free shipping), however I was not expecting anything special due to the low price I paid.  I picked it up yesterday, and to say that I am impressed would be a gross understatement, the slide to frame fit is just as tight as my TRP, and the barrel bushing is so tight to the barrel and slide I had a hard time disassembling the pistol for the first time.

As of this post I have ~200 rounds of cheap Blazer AL cased ammo through mine with no malfunctions.  I have not had a chance to put it on paper since it was getting dark, but I had no problem making a 4"x4" block of wood dance at 50 yards right out of the box (It did hit a little to the left, but not much)

Hopefully by next week I will have time to put it on some sandbags and punch paper

Some of the things I really like about this pistol
- GI guide rod and plunger from the factory
- Parkerized finish
- Non-ambi safety (don't like ambi)
- Novak rear sight (instead of adjustable like on standard R.O.)
- No ILS mainspring housing
- Series 70 slide (no FP block)
- Front slide serrations

Things I don't care for
- Fiber optic FS (does come with both red and green insert)
- El Cheapo factory mags (expected)

All in all I think this pistol is a hell of bargain, and would highly recommend it

Please feel free to ask any questions or request additional pictures

I have a RO Stainless in .45, overall I like the gun. Very accurate. I think the fit of the slide to frame could be better. Slight marring on the slide on the front bottom. Dust cover I guess? Springfield says it's not abnormal it's from firing the gun. I think it shouldn't happen. If I could do it again I would probably buy the RO Operator. The rail would be nice to have.

Thanks for the info. I was really considering one of these, as I've always been happy with SA. But, with the Colt Combat Unit Rail Gun now out, it has everything, just the way I want it.

But, those are my special preferences; this pistol is a very good price point for anyone who it fits their needs.

Springer mags aren't as bad as you think.

Give them a try.

I agree they are not "bad" and they function fine, but I would like to see Springfield start packing stainless 8rd mags like other manufacturers instead of the blued 7rd mags

I still had a bunch of CMC 8rd Power Mags from when I had my TRP

--------------

ETA:  Sig's come with these: (Tac-Ops even comes with 4)

My factory Springfield mags function fine. I do prefer the Chip McCormicks though, 10 rds are nice and they function fine too.

Loving mine in 9mm, only thing I don't like is some of the brands shoot a little high, might go back to springfield for an adjustable rear sight. I've since added an ambi as I'm a dirty lefty

Mine in 9mm has been really nice, aside from a trigger that was beyond suck. SA fixed it on there dime, of course.

Mine has a pretty good factory trigger, it has a little creep... But nothing terrible

I'm not holding my breath, but if they do I hope its a champion size with a steel frame and GI recoil assembly

Not sure why Springfield has a obsession with making commander size guns in AL only with a bull barrel

Right now I just want a CCO sized gun with a rail.
