| Does anyone besides Colt offer this service? Ballpark figure with a refinish? |
|
If you're smart, you'll let Colt do it even if you have to wait.
This holds especially for a refinish. Unless you go with a really top refinisher like APW-Cogan, Ford's or Glenrock, it's not going to be anything like a factory level job and is going to ruin an expensive Python from improper polishing. If you just won't go with Colt, re-barreling can be done to factory level workmanship by Cylinder & Slide Shop and Frank Glenn. C&S will be slow and expensive. I'm not sure about how fast Glenn is, everyone is swamped right now. My advice...be smart, go with Colt and protect the value of the gun. How much each charges, is something you'll have to ask them. Both Ford's and Glenrock are known for their ability to do a near-Colt factory level Royal Blue type finish but only Colt can do a real Royal Blue and do it right. http://www.apwcogan.com/ http://www.fordsguns.com/ http://www.gunbluing.com/ Re-barreling: http://www.cylinder-slide.com/ http://www.glenncustom.com/ The above companies are "acceptable" for re-bluing and re-barreling work. No one else is. If you use anyone other than Colt or the above, you deserve just what you're going to get. |

I agreed with everything you said but the red part, the current colt royal blue refinishes I've seen are far off from their original royal blue

Colt does not have anymore barrels in stock, either the first pattern receiver threads or the later pattern, which was used on the models just before they were all discontinued. Sometimes differentiated by 2 and 1 pin front sights. They would have to farm out fiinding one, which would add to your wait.
I had a regular stainless/matte Python from 1985 polished with the Ultimate finish and it came out very nice. That was a couple years ago and when I telephoned about having another polished the same way, the Custom Shop Supervisor said they could do it, but the person who did my original Ultimate polish job had retired. The Royal blue finish is a lot different than in the 1980's and earlier. I would consult with Jim Alaimo, who runs Nutmeg Sports in CT. He was the Custom Shop Supervisor until the early 1980's. He mostly does ivory grips and coordinating custom engraving, but he would be the person I trust on determining what to do.....stay factory or go to an outside vendor like Doug Tunbull ( a personal favorite for the real Colt Royal blue). Just my 2 cents. Pythons a worth the effort now since they are priced out of the statosphere. Just so you know, if the polisher polishes some of the roll marks out at the edges, they do not have anyone in the engraving shop to retouch the markings to bring them back up to original sharpness. Just the way it is.....Thos days are long gone. BTW, Frank Glenn does a great Python DA trigger job.......the best money can buy and his turn around time was decent. |
