I just bought a 1956 Python and plan to make it my 'safe-queen'.  It's about 97% perfect with a few handling marks but nothing serious really.

I'm thinking of having it reblued by Colt. Should I? Should I leave it as is? Would rebluing it add to the value of it?

Thanks for any input.

If it is 97%, leave it alone.  You will hurt the value if you redo it.

If you want a perfect one, sell the one you have and buy a 100% one.

Don't do it.

Don't refinish 97% anything, least of all a Python.

Leave it the way it is..  Current prices on one like yours is 1K or better...

97% '56 Pythons are worth over twice your estimate of 1k..... have it refinished and then
It will be a $1000 Python

97%?

NO! DO NOT REBLUE

If you require a 100% python, sell the 97% (you will not have a problem there), and then have fun finding a 100% gun.  Not going to find one from the 50's though.

`56 was right during Colt's post-war second golden-era.  And about the beginning of the best period for pythons, cumilating in the late 60's.

Not even Colt can blue like they did back then.  You would have an inferior finish.

Do...not...reblue it.
My first handgun was a 4" Python, it was a duty revolver with quite a bit of holster wear.
I had it bead-blasted and reblued, really looked sharp and I only had a total of $375 1980 dollars in it.

Sold it in 1990 to buy a near perfect S&W 27 8 3/8".
I still have the 27, I wish I had the Python as well.
