I got the OK from the Boss (wife) to get another 1911. I plan on having one custom built. The only 1911 I have is a SA Pro which has all the bells and whistles. For this one I want a plain jane 1911 that is reliable. The only requests I have is that I want a classic commander hammer like this one, a long solid trigger, and a beavertail thumb safety w/o the palmswell. I would also put night sights (not sure which ones yet) and have the MSH and frantstrap checkered at 20lpi and highcut. I was also leaning to having it parked.
Of course all the internals would be changed out a fitted as needed. As far as Smiths go I was initially thinking about Chuck Rogers or Bob Rodgers and a few of the other highend smiths but was thinking for what I want these guys would be overkill. These guys specialize in making the 1911 reliable as well as beautiful and I just need the reliable part. I am still thinking about contacting one of these guys to get a price and see what I could work out. Is there any other Smith that yall are aware of that would be a good choice? |

Jim Garthwaite is pretty darn good. Actually, that's a understatement. He's very good!

There's alot of good gunsmiths out there that do great work. Whether or not they are taking work right now is the problem. Springfield Custom shop is a great candidate. I just sent in my GI to have the following done: Beavertail fit Front sight dovetailed with a gold bead front sight Lower and bevel ejection port w/ new extended ejector Ring hammer installed Retro rear sight installed Slide satin Ion-Bonded There prices are fair and the turnaround time seems short. |

Damn, I didnt even think of sending it to them. I was looking at their custom worksheet and was wondering if I can send in the few parts I want (Hammer, trigger, beavertail) or do they only use what they have? Thanks for the replies. Some damn good looking choices. |

+1 Edd is awsome with 1911s you can check out his website here he usually responds to email pretty quickly but if you call him expect to leave a message as he has a dayjob and will get back to you ASAP. I have a Vietnom War era 1911A1 I plan to have him tweak for me.

If in the Houston area, you might give Eddie Vandenburg a call. He's in League City I believe. He has done good work for me in the past. I have also had good luck with Novak's. Although Novak's is in WV. |
