I'm looking for some opinions here. Of the following, if it is otherwise well cared for on a regular basis, which company is considered the most reliable after being dragged through the mud, and generally beaten up during a hard day of use? If there are specific models which you think are better than others I'd appreciate those recommendations. Colt Springfield Kimber I've heard that Springfield's tolerances aren't as tight as the other two, so they are more likely to function full of grit and grime. Any truth to this? |

I've had really good luck with Colts once they are broken in (in my experience they do require a bit of break-in). Past that, they become some of my most reliable pistols. I own 3 currently but want more! I have had exactly 1 SA and it was pure crap. But I can't pass judgment based on 1 gun. I wouldn't mind owning another at some point based on feedback here. I have only owned 1 Kimber. I still own it. It's been a great gun and extremely reliable. I have 3164 rounds downrange with it so far. |

I'd say find a used Kimber Custom II. I have to say out of all the 1911's I own, I believe that one would continue to run with the most abuse. In general I'd say Colt goes first on the list. Springfield and Kimber it very much depends on the model IMO. Then again I think you could buy a Rock Island and change out a few parts and have a 1911 you could trust through anything. |

I have yet to examine an 'out of the box' 1911 that I would carry in defense of my life. I pretty much consider a reliability tune by a competent smiff to be a necessary expense. Granted, many from the 'Big 3' run just fine as shipped from the factory, but I always find room for improvement. |
