Bought my Rem 1911 R1 yesterday afternoon...picked my son up at the bus stop..and we blazed tracks for my favorite shooting spot to try it out this afternoon. Just an informal quick shoot..my son begged to bring my Springer Milspec along..so I did. Also brought along 200 rounds of old purple box Fiocci .45 one box of Federal and one box of Remington/UMC all 230gr ball stuff from the 1990's (what was left of my stash). Personaly..I really couldn't tell a nickels worth of difference between the two. ..The Springfield 1911 is a fine shooter...and so is the Remington...the trigger pull on the new Remington is just slightly better than the Springfield(series 80 fp safety and all).
Pumped approx. 200 rounds through the Rem..and the rest through the Springfield...I had zero malfunctions..and mostly shot the new Remington...my son had three or four funky stoppages with the Rem...with the last or next to last shot in the mag failing to return to battery..this happened with both the Remington 7 shot mags and Chip McCormick 8 shot Shooting Star mags.. ..I tried to duplicate the jam myself by limp-wristing the new gun...but no..wouldn't jam for me. The 15 year old kid had no issues at all with the Springer. I'm chalking the Remington's jams up to new/stiff/un-broken in gun..with a touch of limp-wrist.
The Remington has a few sharp edges...the receiver dustcover looks like it's starting to wear a fine line along the side of the slide in front of the dust cover along one side...must be a slight burr in the dust cover rubbing a scratch in the slide's blue..the front sight blade doesn't sit perfectly flush on top the slide..can see daylight between the slide and blade...I wish it was black parked like the Springer instead of blued....only gripes I got with the New remington 1911 R1. The Remington was perfectly accurate..just as good as my Springer...and at least in my hands was perfectly reliable...I'm a happy camper! |

| I am very pleased with my R1. Accurate and great trigger, but the mags suck. Maybe it was just the 2 I received, but the first 100 rounds had numerous failure to feed, mostly on the second and last round. I bought 2 Wilson Combat, and 2 Chip McC's and now it runs flawlessly. For the price you can't beat it. |

Check for copper marks on the REM R1 Slide Stop. Sometimes the slide stop protrudes into the magazine well to much for some magazines and may need to be trimed back a little. Main difference between the Rem and SA. Rem frame is cast while the SA is forged. Got this issue...it ain't locking the gun open early....yet.. My Springfield Milspec had this problem..and it had to be fixed...couldn't get through a mag-full of ball ammo without locking back...
My digital cam is defunct..

It did for your son. Me I use a thumbs forward grip. My thumb can sometimes keep the slidestop from being pushed up (if my grip is a little off) . |

It did for your son. Me I use a thumbs forward grip. My thumb can sometimes keep the slidestop from being pushed up (if my grip is a little off) . Well...he cleared those himself...but the jams I saw him work out..the slide just wasn't fully forward..wasn't locked open with the slide stop. Was more like the ammo fed slow..killed slide momentum...I tend to think it was some friction on the feed ramp. The Remington wouldn't feed hollowpoints the first shoot either..hang up on the feed ramp...I notice now it feeds them slick.
But I do agree..the slide-stop needs fitted up better...you can lock the slide open..and push a loaded mag up in the gun..andd watch the bullet pop past the slide stop nubbie! Leaves a scratch on the bullet..and the contact is obvious. My Springfield Milspec had the exact same issue...and it was a locking-back mo-fo. Sent it to Springfield for repairs..and the dimpled tthe back of the slide stop lever..helped but didn't aleviate the issue. Rather than send it back again..I cleaned up the issue myself..reduced the lever's nubbie down to where it didn't protrude so far in the magwell. The Rem has a lot of side play with the lever too. ..not so sure a better fitted slide stop lever might be the thing to do with this gun.
Looks to me like Remington put the effort and work into the top-end of the gun. Excellent and tight slide/barrel/barrel bushing fit...the wrench is a neccesity. |
