Gonna be shooting my revolver from a bench tomorrow night to see what kind of accuracy the gun is capable of giving.
The revolver is a 357, and obviously I can shoot 38's out of it as well. My question is, will 357 Mag rounds yield better results than 38's? Or should the 38's group just as well? I have a bunch of 38's right now, as the gun is a range toy and I don't need super power rounds to kill paper LOL. I was just curious if it would be worth it to get some 357's or not. And yes, I am aware that I have to clean the chambers really well after a steady diet of 38's due to carbon build up, so no need to warn me of that. Thanks! |

Most of that'll be because the recoil is less, so you can focus on the target and your fundamentals instead of bracing for the recoil or flinching. Disclaimer: there's probably more match/target loads for the .38, instead of inexpensive blasting or hunting grade ammo for the .357. |
| most 38/357 revolvers are the top of the heap for inherent accuracy- I have a run of the mill model 10 smith that will hold 5 inch 50 yard groups hand held- the only pistol I have than can do better is my les baer premier two with 1.5 inch package. If your 38/357 does not deliver sub two inch groups at 25 yards, either something is wrong with the gun or your shooting is off. |

The most important thing is to sight the pistol in properly with the ammo you intend to use cahnges in ammo especially weigh ssem to have much larger effects with short pistol brrels tha longer barrels, I can do 8" st 50 but I am getting better I got alot better when I painted the front sight bright orange. |

I would imagine, all else being equal, the .357 would be mechanically more accurate.
For example, if you were to hand load the same bullet with the same powder charge in both a 38 case and a 357 case, I think the 357 would be more "accurate". Because, there would be less freebore with the 357 than the 38. (357 longer in chamber) |

Ive had outstanding luck with the 38spl /357magnum Jframes M37 38spl only M640 357mag M649 357mag M640 38spl +P M637-1 38spl +P M642-2 38spl +P Kframes in 38/357 M19 4inch M19 4inch M13 4inch Lframes in 38/357 M686 4inch Ruger GP100 3inch 38/357 Ruger GP100 6inch 38/357mag Everyone of them loved shooting LEAD 148WC and 158 SWC in 38spl Even the small Jframes would goup 5rds into a clover size group at 7Y So if I was going for speed and accuracy I would use the 38spl 148 WC |

Having shot countless 12 shot groups from a ransom rest: It entirely depends on the load. There is no apparent logic what load is accurate and what isn't. I've shot rugged holes with one load but add or substract 0.1 grains and the results are below average. Weak loads that don't properly expand the casing (apprent by fouling on the outside of the casing) can shoot great or not. Powerful loads near or at published max can shoot great or not. Same for everything in between.
There is only one way to find out: Shoot and look at the results. |

My K frame revolvers all shoot really well with good ol' 158 grain lead bullets...whether they're loaded in a .38 case or a .357 case. One of the best groups I've ever fired at 25 yards was done with my 3" model 10 at 25 yards. Almost the same here except with a 6inch barrel and at 35yards. Believe it or not it was my very first group with that revolver. and it was a Ruger GP100 Now If I can find a Service Pistol that could meet the accuracy of my revolvers I would be very happy! Some of them came close. But not many. |
