I am in the market for a .22 revolver for plinking and target shooting.
Any recommendations?

Pick your barrel length and you are done

All my other revolvers are longer but in the 617 I have been very pleased with a 4"

Thanks for the recommendation nhsport.
I can't decide between the following:
S&W 617
Ruger Single Six
Taurus 94

Out of the 3 you listed I would get the Ruger. Keep your eyes open and you can still find a occasional deal like the S&W Model 18 I picked up for $300 about 3 years ago. The older S&W rimfires are very, very sweet.

Smith is an excellent choice.  However, they are very hard to find and prices can be hard to swallow.  Anything under $400 is a steal.

I have a Taurus 96, their mid frame version.  Not as nice as a Smith but shoots extremely well and only cost me $200.

In single action, Ruger.  End of story.  Colt made a 22 (the New Frontier) but its long out of production and priced accordingly.  Diamondbacks are even worse.

If you want something new, there are really only a couple of choices:
Single Action: Ruger Single Six
Double Action: S&W 617 (4”, 6” or 8”) or 63 (5”)

Used: the above plus the S&W 17 (6”) and 18 (4”) or S&W 63 (4”). There are a few more, but I forget the model numbers.

The Smiths are the guns for accuracy. The Ruger Single Six can be accurate, but it can also be a hit or miss thing.

Seems that the older Smiths and Wessons, Rugers, and Colts have better trigger pulls than the latest marks. I purchased a new Ruger Single Six Stainless last Christmas. The pistol was great especially with the .22 mag cyl. However, the trigger pull was horrible compared to my Woodsman and old Ruger Mk 1. It took a Wolffe spring kit and some judicious grinding on the sear faces to get it right. Wouldn't take anything for it now. I know that the manufacturers have to sell "idiot resistant" firearms these days, but if you can't hit with it, what good is it? I have a Model 19 4" S&W and have had several Ruger Blackhawks in the past. The factory trigger pulls were much better.

Buy a used S&W Model 18.

If you're willing to pay, you could also try to find one of these (Ruger sp101):

I have a Taurus Tracker in .22LR. Have had it for about 4 years and been pretty happy with it so far.
