I have three 1911's with the Ed Brown "bobtail" treatment and like it quite a bit, primarily for the way it fits my hand compared to a traditional 1911 MSH.   I recently picked up a new Colt Combat Commander and was planning to order another bobtail MSH, but then saw a few round butt 1911's and they piqued my interest.  Has anyone here had a chance to handle/shoot both?  If so, is there a big difference in ergonomics between them?

Not sure.  I assumed they were the same as a bobtail, just used different terminology.

I have a Nighthawk Talon II bobtail, which is a commander size 1911. I really like the way it fits my hand.

Wilson is doing a rounded butt–– is that what you mean?

Apparently they are developing a magwell that fits it.

It's a permanent alteration of the frame, obviously, and limits future options, but you are already into that world with the bobtail.  For my hand, the rounded butt would be better than bobtail, but if you like the bobtail, might wanna stick with it.

Nope, similar, but different frame mods between the two.  The round butt mod is more subtle than the bobtail.  Bobtail has been around for about 10 years now and the round butt started showing up in '06 or '07 on some factory guns.

They're pretty much the exact same frame mod, it's just that the grips don't look as stupid with the round butt, because they're contoured to match instead of just looking like someone sawed off a corner.

I can't tell the difference.  I've carried a Bobtailed Colt Commander for about five years now.  Great little pistol.

Dan Wesson has it right on the CCO. Saving up for one.

Real round butt 1911s have a radius on them that matches the pin. It's a proper 90* corner. Very subtle.

Who makes these, or could make the cut?

Take the wooden grips off and they'd be too close to tell any difference.  The Smith, and I have one, has a rounder grip panel.  Other than that????????????

True "round butt" 1911's fall about halfway between a bobtail and standard frame. Bobtails require a new MSH, while round butt frames use a standard MSH.  It's hard to see the difference in pictures. That's why I was curious if anyone here had handled both side-by-side.

As far as "round butt" are you asking about the treatment that S&W uses, that is very
similar to a bobtail, or like shown on the DW CCO above, where the lower corner is
slightly rounded?

More like what Dave Berryhill did with this one:

Really.  The SIG Nightmare, Kimber Super Carry and that S&W E-series all have grips that were designed to taper around the corner on two axes and look better (IMO) than the Brown and DW grips that look like sawed-off Government grips.

Those are more rounded , that is true . IMHO there is nothing about the DW's that look sawed off . I like the looks of mine . To each his own .

Thanks ........
